In total, it is planned to rebuild about 34 kilometers of the trail.
According to very preliminary estimates, the value of the project is about 8 million. euros. However, the final amount will be clear after the public procurement of the design and construction works, ”Evaldas Tamariūnas, representative of the Highway Administration, told BNS.
The works will be financed by the Road Development and Maintenance Program. The first stage of reconstruction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023, the second – by 2024, the third – by the end of 2025.
According to E. Tamariūnas, the provision of the bike lane will take five years, because “the terms and scope of the works depend on the financing of the Road Maintenance and Development Program”.
“Currently, the Lithuanian Highway Administration manages almost 1,950 kilometers of pedestrian and bicycle paths close to state roads. In addition, the Road Administration currently manages about 200 projects under cooperation agreements only with the country’s municipalities, ”he explained.
Once the Smiltynė – Nida cycle path is fixed, it will be handed over to the municipalities of Klaipėda and Neringa for maintenance. This is foreseen in the cooperation agreements signed between the Road Administration and the municipalities in August and September.
“The Lithuanian Highway Administration manages the roads of state importance. They consist of several elements and one of them is the hiking and biking route. Generally speaking, the trail is part of a building, a highway of national importance. The Smiltyne-Nida bike path is the only road owned by the Highway Administration, which is not an element of the state highway, but is a separate structure. For this reason, once the path is fixed, it will be handed over to the municipalities, ”said E. Tamariūnas.
The municipality of the city of Klaipeda will have about 850 meters of trail, Neringa, about 33 kilometers.
