“During the entire excavation period in Salantai, many petroleum products, that is, gasoline and diesel fuel, and several empty tanks were excavated in the 3.5-acre area around the private farm estate,” says Olga Vėbrienė, Director of the Department of Environmental Protection.
Total excavated:
– 9 large capacities (total volume – 15.7 m3, that is, 15,700 liters);
– 62 barrels of 200 liters each;
– 4 metal containers of 100 liters each;
– 20 48-liter metal containers with various metal parts;
– 48 batteries of various sizes;
– 250-liter container filled with bottles of non-originating materials (detergents and alcoholic products have been preliminarily verified by specialists from the Environmental Protection Agency. Exact results will be determined by laboratory tests).
In addition, 2.04 t of used bonnet barriers were added to the waste managers and 147.86 m3 of oil-contaminated liquid was pumped from the ponds.
O. Vėbrienė emphasizes that to eliminate the pollution incident in Salantai and find the source of pollution, several service forces were needed: employees of the Kretingos vandenys company and Klaipėdos vanduo.
Specialists from the Lithuanian Geological Survey transported their equipment to carry out the work and employees of the Environmental Protection Agency took samples. With the help of a metal detector, soldiers from the Samogitian district of the Voluntary National Defense Forces of the Lithuanian Armed Forces helped.
The Department of the Environment is currently conducting an investigation to estimate the damage caused to the environment. Samples are also taken twice a week to determine the contamination of the water from the contamination site, and the results of preliminary ecogeological studies are awaited. Work on cleaning contaminated drains has started.
It is recalled that on March 1, the notification of oil spills in the Salantai body of water was received.
The Fire and Rescue Service was immediately notified of the contamination and forces were called in to remove the contamination. Bonon barriers were built, work on removing pollutants from the surface of the water was started, and the spread of pollutants was stopped. After the actions were taken, the pollutants did not enter the Salanto stream.
To find the source of contamination, engineering network drawings were examined. According to the presented network diagrams, the manhole covers were moved and the networks were inspected. As the drawings did not correspond to the real situation, the source of the contamination could not be immediately identified and the search work continued for several days.
During the works, water and soil samples were taken to determine contamination, the concentration of air pollution and the water flow were measured. Pollutants are also removed from the surface of the water body.
