All Martians sent to Mars are equipped with state-of-the-art cameras, but the problem is downloading that data to Earth.
Here, the Curiosity Martian can send data at just 32 kilobits per second. When connected to a Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe, it can send data at 2 megabits per second.
It seems like a decent speed already, but the “window” through which data can travel to Earth is only 8 minutes throughout the day on Mars. There is very little time and a lot of information collected.
So NASA has yet to abandon the idea of filming Mars and sending videos to Earth. This would take an inappropriate amount of time. Since everything on Mars is quite static, at least the objects visible on the surface, it is much better to just take photos of them and download them.
So where is that promised video? Here is the. And for this 4K video, we have ElderFox documentaries to thank.
The video uses high-resolution images of Mars captured and sent to Earth by Martians Spirit, Oppotunity, and the latest still-running Curiosity.
All photos are authentic and unedited. They are arranged in such a way that you get a fluid narrative about Mars and its surface objects.
