In Kaunas, people have been falling like leaves since August 6: around two city residents die every day after buying drugs of unknown origin. Most are suspected of consuming methanol, the so-called wood spirit, of which only 30 milliliters cause death.
There has been no such increase in deaths from alcohol substitutes since the country’s reestablishment of independence.
“The situation changes by the hour,” said Kaunas prosecutor Auksė Lipkevičienė, who is leading the investigation into the number of victims, on the number of victims of careless deprivation of life, illegal possession and sale of domestic alcohol and its substitutes.
Almost all of the deceased, from the Aleksotas district of Kaunas, where the main suspect, Violeta D., 63, lives, were arrested for three weeks.
However, there is no doubt that there are more outlets in this area.
More than 10 searches were carried out at the homes of local merchants, and one of them died of the surrogates within days after the allegations were made.
During the search, several hundred liters of homemade strong alcohol, its mixtures, mortars, denaturation were seized, but it has not yet been determined who delivered such a quantity of these poisonous intoxications to Aleksotas.
He acted with extreme caution
Retired Violeta D. is well known to local fans who call her Wolf or Vile.
Guests constantly visited Vilė’s two-room apartment in the Antanavos Street apartment building; Usually people in their 50s and 60s came, but there were also people in their 30s.
Vilė, who has lived there for about 15 years, has managed to keep the point to this day; Although the police had carried out a series of raids, he still managed to come off the ball dry.
According to the officials, the hostess acted with caution: she only admitted family clients or those who introduced themselves to trustworthy clients, for example, they said “I am from Kęst”.

Get rid of the evidence
Former Aleksotas elder Liukrecija Navickienė recalled the complaints of the locals, which began to flow over the Vilė point more than 10 years ago.
Representatives of the elderly passed the information about the drop point to the Aleksotas police station, which operated in the same building.
However, many raids were unsuccessful. The hostess did not have a large amount of intoxicants at home.
It is suspected that while the agents were waiting at the door, Violeta D. managed to pour them into the sink, the toilet.
Violet D. was caught only twice, in 2010 and 2013. In both cases, the illegal possession of strong alcohol paid off with fines of LTL 520 and LTL 680, but the flow from the dripper did not stop at this point.
Dozens of drinking spots in Aleksotas have closed in the last 10 years, but he has been operating out of Violeta D.’s home until now.
The neighbor lost consciousness
According to Lietuvos Rytas, one of the first victims was Violeta D. Black’s neighbor, who had been known for a long time.
A man who lived in the same apartment building had bought him a pint of alcohol substitute in early August.
The man in his sixties didn’t feel anything suspicious: Methanol is no different from store alcohol in terms of smell or taste.
After a while, the neighbor began to feel nauseous, the ailments got worse.
Unconscious, he was taken to the Kaunas clinics and extinguished on August 7.
When they met, they spoke positively about the man: they drank, but they were not antisocial, they were not prone to conflict, they were able to maintain order in their home.
Officially, the Kaunas resident did not work anywhere, but he had golden hands: he made money by repairing houses and repairing appliances. True, intoxicants often set foot, they do not allow to work with full force.
The intoxicants took everything
However, many other victims of the pill did not work at all, they did not get along, they lived only on the benefits.
Some of Vilė’s clients have just turned forty, previously acquired specialties, had families, but lost everything to alcohol.
After receiving the benefits, these people mostly bought alcohol in stores, but the money quickly melted away and they turned their gaze to points like Will. The pill was much cheaper and was also available with debts.
At the point of hope, the neat neighbors complained to the services about the images on the stairs and in the courtyard of the apartment building: drunk customers crawled and fell asleep on the floor, fell asleep right here. Some behaved aggressively, making noise.
But the drop point hostess just chided her hand without going into tongues.
The locals even considered that the woman could have a backup in the police or other facilities.

“According to preliminary data, people who have consumed methanol have been poisoned. This is a very insidious poison, probably the most dangerous substitute for alcohol.
In one sip (30 milliliters of wood alcohol can die, and 10 milliliters) you can go blind, ”explained toxicologist Jonas Šurkus, a doctor at the Kaunas Clinics.
The specialist saw two waves of patients: at first there was no possibility of saving the residents of Kaunas, because they consumed pure methanol, and then the people who came to the hospital drank a mixture of methanol, so they are expected to save them.
The most common symptoms experienced by almost all poisoners before death were nausea, vomiting, headache, and abdominal pain.
Still looking for end of offers
Traders in the pill did not reveal during searches and interviews who presented them with a batch of potentially deadly substitutes. It is not ruled out that these people operate not only in Kaunas.
Therefore, according to the prosecutor A. Lipkevičienė, it is especially important to identify not only outlets, but also a clandestine wholesaler.
Approximately 20 liters of intoxicants in 5-liter containers were found in Vilė’s home alone.
By the way, in the Kaunas District Court, Violeta D. testified that she did not feel guilty for the deaths; He did not sell alcohol for two months and considered what he had found in his home for his own needs.
