On Tuesday, Sūduva introduced the team’s new coach, Spaniard Victor Basadre, to the country’s media at a remote press conference.
The 50-year-old specialist will replace Saulius Širmelis, who was in charge of the team for less than a season and had to be satisfied with league A silver last fall.
Vidmantas Murauskas, the president of Sūduva, made it clear that only foreign candidates were chosen in search of the latter’s successor.
The Marijampolė people were bribed by the fact that the Spaniard followed the A League last season, so he already has a lot of knowledge about Lithuanian teams, including Sūduva herself.
“He turned out to be a man who dedicates 24 hours to football. per hour, and left an impression. We collected information about the coach, we contacted him, we discussed several times about football, our options, last season, we asked what mistakes we noticed during it.
Those languages satisfy us. Then we had a larger meeting with all the club staff and assistants, we talked, everything was fine. It was agreed and signed the agreement ”, said V. Murauskas.
V. Basadre was interested in Lithuanian football, because at the beginning of last year he had come to Vilnius for a short time and temporarily helped Marijampolė’s main competitor, “Žalgiris”, prepare for the season.
The Vilnius people had hired another Spaniard Juan Ferrando at the time, but he did not show up in Lithuania due to his illness, so he later crossed hands with Belarusian Alexei Baga.
“Although I worked in Vilnius for only a few days, afterwards I continued to follow the championship. I know how successful Sūduvai was last year, what the club is like and what its goals are. We can and want to recover the success of the past ”, said Basadre himself.
However, the management of “Sūduva”, unlike the coach, still does not know what to expect from the next season.
Because there are many unknowns, first of all, financial. The team that will no longer receive a payment from UEFA for the championship title and will no longer have a shot at the 20% Champions League selection plans. more modest budget than a year ago – 800 thousand. euros.
It is true that even during the season, “Sūduva” was often supplemented by new players, at the same time increasing the planned expenses. V. Murauskas emphasizes that the number named on Tuesday is not final.
Another thing is that the club, which had previously avoided a radical change, decided to fundamentally renew its composition after last year’s failure.
Only five footballers who played in Marijampolė last season have a contract with Sūduva: Nicolas Gorobsov, Aleksandras Živanovičius, Thomasas Salamonas, Ivan Kardumas, Semiras Kerla.
The last two elders were allowed to seek new jobs; V. Murauskas does not hide that he would like to experience new challenges.
Then there can be three players left in Sūduva.
The search for a newcomer, which was suspended while V. Murauskas planned to sell the club, should be accelerated after the presentation of the team strategist.
“We are talking with several Lithuanians, including residents of Marijampolė. This morning there was only one meeting. The scout team works, offering options to the coach. There are no answers yet, but I think that every day we will have more players. It is also planned to invite four Youth team players to join the training, and whether they will earn a place on the field is another question.
Therefore, it would be unwise to set goals today. We don’t have a team yet, it’s not clear how the team will achieve it, ”said the club’s long-term president.
V. Basadre should come to Lithuania only next week; agreed to work with the former Sūduva coaching headquarters.
