The Latvians desperately wanted to score at least one goal, which would become a draw, but they failed to do so within 90 minutes.

UEFA has abolished the away goal rule this season, so if Sūduvai’s goal is lost in Riga, the Latvian side would have no advantage. A previously scored goal on the field led to success in a draw.

Marijampolė’s “Sūduva” played for the Champions League team for the last three seasons. However, last year the people of Marijampolė lost the title of Lithuanian champion, so this summer they have to start in a lower ranking competition: the European Conference League.

In the first qualifying round, Marijampolė won only in the time added by the referee, and all goals were scored from the 11-meter mark.

At the start, in the 27th minute from the 11-meter mark, Nikolas Gorobovs scored and the hosts were 1: 0.

However, Sūduva was not happy for a long time: 35 min. Marijampolė already offended in his goal area and the judge also imposed an 11-meter penalty. It was perfectly performed by Raimondas Krollis.

There seemed to be no more goals.

However, already during added time of the second half, “Sūduva” had another chance to score a goal from the 11-meter mark: the Latvian player played with his hand and won in the 96th minute. Greek Alexandros Gargalatsidis had the opportunity to change things.

The Marijampol representantes representatives will play in the second round with Polish vice-champion Czestochowa Rakow.

The first game should be played on July 22. In Lithuania, the second on July 29. In Poland.

In order for Sūduva to enter the main tournament of the European Cup, he must pass four selection stages.
