J. Navickaitė said elementary and middle school students will return to the educational process starting next week and most children, with a few exceptions, will receive instruction remotely.
“The exceptions refer to special schools for children with special educational needs. They will be able to continue working during the quarantine in the form of contact. This was done before winter break.
There are also exceptions for primary school students when their parents are working to manage the epidemiological situation and do not have access to adequate childcare. It is also the help that primary school students really need for distance education ”.
According to her, the municipality will give these students the opportunity to come to a school or other designated institution from where they can join distance education. In addition, said J. Navickaitė, if necessary, free meals will be organized for these children or the conditions for lunch will be created after bringing their food.
“Care will also be provided so that these children can simply spend time safely on the school premises while their parents are working.”
An SMSM representative, based on spring data, indicated that approximately 500-600 students took advantage of this opportunity at that time.
“Therefore, we think and calculate that a similar scale will probably be maintained in January. Currently, it is the municipalities, together with the schools, that collect this information from parents and find out what the need would be in a particular municipality. We see that in some municipalities this need is very small. Ten children, for example, in Šiauliai district and Kaišiadorys district. Such need has not yet been identified. “
According to J. Navickaitė, it is obvious that those cities where there are large medical institutions may face a greater need, adding that there should be no big challenges, as the spring practice will be used.
When asked if the ministry is considering how efforts will be made to help graduates, they have not thought in as much detail yet.
“The epidemiological situation does not allow us to think about when students could contact education again. Obviously, as soon as that opportunity exists, preschoolers, elementary school and high school graduates must go back first. “
What are the moods of the graduates?
The president of the Lithuanian Student Union, S. Aškinytė, assured that the mood of the graduates is really difficult at the moment, because the exams are not easy.
“Taking exams is really stressful and it’s not easier to do it in such circumstances. Graduates are really alarmed and feel that it is now more difficult to prepare for exams than under normal conditions. Of course, there is time and it is not as unexpected as last year. (…). This year, everything is a little calmer, because we are preparing for distance education ”.
Sara Aškinytė
A student representative also commented that graduates would expect the exams to be facilitated this year, but while there is time, they will try to prepare properly if there is no such facilitation.
“It is worth mentioning that everyone in the education system faces challenges. Distance learning is not yet as straightforward as it could be. Although distance education, which started in the fall, is certainly doing better than it was in the spring, schools still face many challenges. It’s really difficult for teachers and it’s a great challenge for them.
S. Aškinytė added that students are currently complaining that due to the whole situation, their emotional state is not the best and there is a lack of certain support measures to address it.
