Strasbourg court banned Lithuania from returning Afghans to Belarus

Five Afghan citizens have applied to the European Court of Human Rights for provisional measures.

They claimed that they had arrived in Belarus in August this year and had since tried to enter Lithuania several times to seek international protection.

The men said they left Afghanistan because, as educated Westerners and Afghans, they could face revenge from the Taliban, who had taken power.

“Several times they were unable to reach Lithuania or return to Belarus. As a result, they were trapped at the border. They have been visibly hiding on the territory of Lithuania since September 5,” the court said in a press release.

The European Court of Human Rights monitors compliance by members of the Council of Europe with the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

This convention prohibits the collective expulsion of foreigners.

This court has previously imposed provisional measures on Afghans and Iraqis stranded on the Polish-Latvian border with Belarus.
