We will not see our Latvian neighbors at the 2022 European Basketball Championship. In the decisive qualifying match on Saturday, the Latvian basketball players gave up the Bulgarians 65:66 and were left without the Old Continent championship for the first time since 1999.
R. Štelmaher, who assumed command of the Latvian national team in 2019, immediately after the defeat to the Bulgarians, received a question about his resignation.
“Yes, I will consider resigning,” said a specialist who also coaches the Kalev club in Tallinn.
The former Vilnius Lietuvos Rytas basketball player did not shirk his responsibility.
“I apologize to all the fans who believed in us. I take full responsibility for such failure. I made mistakes and I am to blame for them, ”lamented R. Štelmaher.
However, Dairis Bertanis, one of the leaders of the Latvia national team, believes that it is not only the manager who is to blame.
“Not only the coach is to blame, the whole team is to blame. Each of us could play better. The last quarter was a tragedy. It is not possible to play in such an important match,” said D. Bertanis.
Bertani from the Chimki club in the Moscow region ran to the rescue with Janis Timma, but her efforts were small.
The Latvian team held to one victory in five matches in the national team competition. It was left at the end of Group H by teams from Bulgaria, Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which entered the European Championship.
