In an awkward situation, he realized who his true friends were.
Once Stasys de Marijampolė was preparing to go with his relatives. He went to the gas station before the trip, but only after filling the whole tank did he realize that he had filled gasoline instead of diesel.
“I think it happened out of distraction and carelessness,” admits Stasys.
How did you react in such a situation? “I never started to start the car, I know it is not possible. First I called a friend, he told me what the problem was, and he, although sitting at the festive table, came immediately”, recalls the interlocutor of the beautiful behavior of the friend.

The man remembers pushing the parked car aside with a friend who came to the service station and tried to get the fuel out of the tank.
“Even though my friends were dressed up and it was raining outside that day, they still held out their hands without thinking. This event not only taught me to check the right fuel sometimes, but also to understand who my real friends are,” he says. a resident of Marijampolė.
Repairs can cost several thousand euros
Giedrius Petrikas, head of the Lietuvos Draudimas Department of Transport Claims, says that modern car fuel filler openings are different: one diameter – for gasoline, the other – for diesel, making it difficult to mix fuel. However, older cars with universal fuel filler openings are also widely used.
“If you add the wrong type of fuel, the car will start and drive until the components of the engine system are filled with the wrong fuel,” says the specialist.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Whether the car engine runs or shuts down depends on the amount of fuel you have refueled and in what proportion the fuel was diluted in the tank,” explains G. Petrikas. He adds that if too much improper fuel is added to the tank, the engine will shut down and will not start.
“Due to the use of improper fuel, various components of the engine wear out violently: pump, injectors. The parts in these units are manufactured with great precision, which can cause wobble, strange sounds, and uneven engine operation due to improper fuel. Often these motor units cannot be repaired, they must be replaced, ”says a Lietuvos Draudimas representative about possible damage.

G. Petrikas cautions: “If you notice a mixture of fuel, the most important thing is not even to try to start the car, but to ask for help immediately. The complexity and cost of the repairs also depend on when the driver noticed his mistake and how he behaved. “
According to the interlocutor, if the car does not start after adding the wrong fuel, it will be enough to clean the fuel tank for several tens of euros. However, if the engine was started and the car was running, repairing or replacing damaged parts can cost several hundred and even thousands of euros.
“In this case, technical assistance would be provided to Lietuvos Draudimas who had opted for compulsory liability insurance. In this case, the car with the mixed fuel would be taken to the nearest garage where the fuel system would be cleaned. Shipping is free for the customer, but you will have to pay for repairs. According to Lietuvos Draudimas, these cases occur several times a month. The average price of transport after mixing fuel to the nearest car repair shop is 112 euros, and with the compulsory Lietuvos Draudimas insurance, this service, like 9 other technical assistance services, is free ”, comments G. Petrikas about professional assistance.
However, mixed fuel is not the only reason why a trip can be stopped, it is also possible to stop unexpectedly due to lack of fuel.
Fuel runs out unexpectedly due to a car breakdown.
“I know my car, there will still be enough fuel for the trip,” thinks the frequent driver, even when they see warning signs that they are running out of fuel. What are the dangers to the car when driving with the “last drops”?
Vytautas Paulikas, director of the company Pro Servisai, warns that driving a half-empty tank can lead not only to an unexpected end of the trip, but also to damage to the car.

“In general, the fuel runs out when a person naturally forgets to recharge in time. When the fuel light comes on, the driver still hopes to reach his destination, although this is not always the case,” says the specialist.
The man adds that fuel can run out unexpectedly even in the event of a car breakdown; the car may incorrectly display how much fuel is left in the tank and may not display it at all.
“If the cause is a breakdown, it must be addressed, because driving with the last drops of fuel is dangerous. There is a variety of sediment, sometimes water, at the bottom of the fuel tank, which can damage the car if it gets into the engine. Solving these problems later costs hundreds of euros ”, she warns.
What to do after the fuel runs out? According to the interlocutor, the most convenient and economical solution is to seek help from relatives who can bring fuel. However, V. Paulikas warns that the fuel can end up in a place that would not be convenient for nearby people.
Deliver up to 10 liters of gasoline or diesel free of charge to the insured
G. Petrikas, Head of the Lietuvos Draudimas Transportation Claims Department, explains what assistance is provided to the insured in the event of an unexpected fuel expiration.

“The technical assistance service supplies up to 10 liters of gasoline or diesel free of charge; the customer only has to pay the invoice for the fuel delivered.
The technical assistance service undertakes to reach the city within 60 minutes at the latest, in the event of an accident on roads and highways, on asphalt roads of national and regional importance, 90 minutes, on other roads, in 180 minutes ”, he explains G. Petrikas.
However, the specialist warns that when driving with fuel residues, stopping the engine can disrupt the operation of the power steering and brake booster, and in such conditions it becomes difficult to control the car even for an experienced driver – a very dangerous situation in road.
“If you allow the fuel to run out completely, you can incur significant repair costs. In the absence of fuel, the injection system may malfunction and the fuel mixture may not ignite. When unburned fuel enters the exhaust system, soot filters, catalytic converters, other parts of the fuel system can be damaged, these parts of the car are expensive, “said the interlocutor.
G. Petrikas noted that after the “empty tank” trip, fuel delivery system failures can occur immediately or only after a while. Therefore, the habit of driving on the last remaining fuel can significantly shorten the “life” of the fuel delivery system.
