“The measure we have taken may not have been entirely accurate and linked to the bottom line, which is a search: you can search but not get a job,” Skvernel said at a press conference after the last government meeting on Wednesday.

“These benefits also slightly distorted the labor market, since some people who had been in the shadows for a long time and had not registered (registered with the Employment Service – BNS) to receive this benefit,” emphasized the outgoing head of government.

According to him, the decision on the continuation of the measure will be taken by the new Government, but S. Skvernel emphasizes that “it was not an adequate and effective measure.

The so-called job search allowance is paid from mid-June until the end of this year; it was available to all those who are not employed and registered with the Employment Service.

Some economists have criticized the benefit because it discourages job search and inflates recorded unemployment rates.

Registered unemployment in Lithuania at the beginning of December reached 15.5 percent. – In one month, the indicator increased by 0.6 percent, and during the year, by 7.1 percent.

Inga Balnanosienė, Director of the Employment Service, previously told BNS that the fact that registered benefits are no longer paid after the New Year can reduce registered unemployment.
