Images of Rūdninkai reached Delphi, where the migrants are kept in the countryside, making various slogans after making posters.
“Freedom, human rights, we are not animals” are the slogans chanted by dozens of migrants.
An Iraqi who shared these images, currently being held in the field, said that this is how they are trying to attract attention.
“We demand freedom because we are not criminals, and they have locked us in an uninhabitable place for people and we do not know anything about our destiny,” he said.
There is no reason to intervene
After contacting Renaldas Žekonis, the Rūdnininkai camp administrator, he confirmed that the migrants had indeed organized a protest.
“They just stand with posters, they demand freedom, there are no disturbances or disruptions of order,” he said.
R. Žekonis mentioned that such actions do not occur often in Rūdninkai.
“At least until I’m an administrator, this is the first time,” the official said.
According to him, the specific demands of migrants by migrants are not heard, they just want to be released. According to R. Žekonis, there is no need for officials to intervene either.
“They stand peacefully with posters, shouting slogans to publish them. “They are not doing anything wrong, they are expressing their will and opinion, and I see no reason to intervene in any way,” he said.
Migrants are dissatisfied
Delfi has previously written that migrants detained in a tent camp in Rūdninkai are not satisfied with their living conditions.
They say they don’t have the right clothes, it’s too cold to fall asleep at night, there’s not even something to make a bonfire.
“Life here is tragic in the literal sense of the word. We are in jail and even jail is sometimes better than here. But we are people, not criminals,” said a refugee who previously lived here.
Migrants also suffer from various diseases and due to weather conditions, many of them catch colds. It is true that here there have been at least no cases of coronavirus in the last week.
According to plans, migrants should not stay in this camp for long, as it would be difficult to survive here during the cold season. Some people from Rūdninkai should be transferred to the closed Kybartai Correctional Center, where 800 illegal immigrants are expected to be housed.
