The quarantine is currently valid until June 7. The Socialist Prime Minister said during a press conference that the quarantine should be extended again. However, it also welcomed the fact that the nation, which was severely affected by the virus, was “approaching a safe escape.”

The sixth extension of the quarantine from March will have to be approved on Wednesday by a 350-seat parliament in which the Sánchez government has a minority. However, according to the agreements reached on Saturday, he can expect members of the party for Catalan independence to abstain during the vote and that the extension of the quarantine be supported by Basque nationalists.

In mid-May, the prime minister tried to extend the state of emergency for a full month, but was forced to shorten the deadline to two weeks to secure the support of the center-right party, Ciudadana.

The state of emergency in Spain was declared on March 14. Spain is one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but the number of new virus infections and deaths in the country is decreasing and the quarantine is gradually being relaxed.

The restrictions are slated to be lifted entirely in late June or early July, depending on the region.
