The spacecraft lifted off from the SpaceX Starbaze complex in Boka Chica on the southeast coast of Texas at 9 p.m. local time (4 p.m. Lithuanian) in the presence of thick fog.
The SN11 is planned to rise to a height of 10 km and then gently descend vertically, braking with rocket engines. However, a minute before landing, the spacecraft’s video camera was turned off.
Video shown by NASA shows large debris falling from the landing site.
SpaceX has not yet indicated the reasons for the explosion, but only reported that the device had experienced an “anomaly.”
This was the fourth unsuccessful attempt at the Starship prototype.
SpaceX hopes that one day these people will be able to fly to the Moon, Mars, or beyond.
The SN8 and SN9 prototypes, launched in December and February, crashed and exploded. In the latest test, the SN10, launched on March 3, apparently successfully landed, but soon exploded. E. Muskas said that the spacecraft hit the ground too hard.
Analysts say that despite past flaws, SpaceX is accumulating valuable data to accelerate spacecraft development.
SpaceX plans to eventually combine the Starship with the Super Heavy launch vehicle and create a reusable system.
The last option will be 120 meters high and will be able to carry 100 tons of cargo into orbit around the Earth. If these plans were implemented, the SpaceX rocket would be the most powerful ever created.
