Under the rules, heads of state are among the people who can formally nominate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. Applications can be submitted until January 31st.
The winners are chosen by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. It does not publish the nominees, they have been classified for 50 years.
The SNB presidency declined to comment on the appointment of S. Cichanouskaya.
“We will not comment on the information about the Nobel Peace Prize,” President Ridas Jasiulionis told BNS on Saturday.
Cichanouskaya, 38, ran for the presidential election in Belarus last August. She lifted her candidacy when the regime arrested her husband, who intended to run for office.
The regime has announced that the election has been won by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, but the opposition and the West have said that the results have been falsified, massive protests have started in Belarus and continue to this day.
Due to pressure from the regime, S. Cichanouskaja withdrew to Lithuania shortly after the elections, where her children were taken before the elections. While living in Lithuania, he seeks to mobilize international support for the opposition and increase pressure on the Lukashenko regime to hold new free elections.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee consists of a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize is announced in October of each year and the award is presented in December in Oslo.
