Seimas president Viktorija Čmilytė confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that he already has a candidate, who plans to present him to Seimas this week. It’s true, so she didn’t reveal her last name.
“I already have a candidate and I intend to register in the next few days,” V. Čmilytė-Nielsen told reporters at the Seimas on Tuesday.
At the end of March, the Seimas dismissed the former director of LGGRTC, Adas Jakubauskas. 79 deputies voted in favor of his resignation during a secret ballot, 4 members of the Seimas opposed, one ballot was damaged.
The discussion about the fate of A. Jakubauskas in office arose after the dismissal of historian M. Jurkutė, who began to speak publicly about the politicization of the centre’s activities.
Some public figures expressed their support online, and members of the scientific community organized a campaign of support, which was reportedly aimed at highlighting the threat to freedom of expression and research.
A. Jakubauskas, in turn, was supported by a group of participants in the resistance to the Soviet occupation regime. The Seimas working group led by MP R. Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė proposed that the suitability of A. Jakubauskas be voted on in parliament as head of the LGGRTC.
Just before the vote in the parliament building, supporters of A. Jakubauskas held a protest, during which sirens sounded.
Upon losing his post, A. Jakubauskas stated that he would continue his career in the academic sector.
