Garland was nominated as a Supreme Court Justice in 2016, but his candidacy was immediately rejected by Republicans. Biden is likely to formally nominate him as the future head of the Justice Department on Thursday. At the same time, candidates for MP Garland will likely be nominated, including Lisa Monaco, a former advisor to the Department of Homeland Security, and Vanita Gupta, a former chief of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
In electing Garland, Biden hopes to see an experienced judge who held important positions in the Department of Justice decades ago in the position of Attorney General. Among other things, Garland oversaw the case of the devastating bombing in Oklahoma City in 1995.
Choosing a president-elect would be tricky for Senate Republicans who rejected the nomination in 2016 and even refused to meet with him when a vacancy appeared on the Supreme Court. However, Biden probably hopes that Garland’s accomplishments and reputation as a reconciling actor will help boost his endorsement this time around.
