According to the Sodra report, 20.7 thousand people worked in Lithuania in September. Foreigners: residents of third countries (not belonging to the EU) who have received a temporary residence and work permit in Lithuania.

In September, the number of insured in Lithuania decreased by 8 thousand compared to the same period last year, of which the number of foreigners from third countries decreased by almost 5 thousand during this period.

In addition, the average income of foreigners from quarantine decreased significantly, although the income of the country’s population in some of the same occupations even increased.

“We see trends that foreigners from third countries have been more affected by the quarantine in Lithuania than local workers. Most of them probably went to their home countries and did not return.

Furthermore, in the sectors where the majority of foreigners work, their median income decreased and the median income of Lithuanians working the same jobs decreased in some professions not as fast as foreigners, and even increased in others and Kristina Zitikytė, Advisor to the Forecasting Department.

In Lithuania, drivers, welders, concrete workers, plasterers, bricklayers, builders, cooks, car and taxi drivers and drivers from third countries worked mainly on heavy trucks and other freight transport.

Of these, cooks (-44%), plasterers (-37%), electricians (-30%), bricklayers (-29%), welders and concrete mixers (- 26%), builders (-22%), truck drivers (- 14%), managers (-7%). By comparison, the number of people working in the same professions in the country neither decreased nor decreased by no more than 5%.

Trends in average income also show that foreigners are under greater pressure in the Lithuanian labor market than the country’s population. For example, the average income of all insured non-foreign concrete workers in the country grew by 15%, electricians by + 10%, truckers by + 11%, and cooks by + 10%. In comparison, the average income of foreigners in the same professions from third countries decreased: concrete mixers -38%, electricians -24%, truckers -8%, cooks -6%.

And so far, the income of foreigners working in the country is usually lower than that of working Lithuanian citizens. Only the analysis of the earnings of highly qualified specialists, such as software specialists or systems analysts, shows that foreigners are paid similarly to Lithuanian specialists, but only a few work in these fields.
