On Sunday it will be clear that MEP Vilija Blinkevičiūtė will lead the Social Democrats from now on.
In an interview with the LRT program “Topic of the day”, he said that he would speak with the leader of the opposition, the “peasant” of the Seimas, Saulius Skvernelis, about the prospects of cooperating with the opposition, but he doubted that it would be necessary. agree to it in writing.

“It seems to me that the most important thing is that both the Social Democratic Party and other opposition parties, sitting at a common table, find common solutions to one or another bill, projects that they support, that the Lithuanian people need. And whether they have agreed to the coalition in writing or not is a secondary issue here, ”he said.
There is a lack of opposition
S. Skvernelis confirmed that he will speak with V. Blinkevičiūtė in the near future.
“It is said that when the congratulations period is over, we will meet. We’ll probably meet bilaterally, maybe trilaterally, and then we’ll talk. ” 15 minutes commented.
And what will be discussed?
It seems both in terms of the content and the form of the agreement.
“It is important that the opposition oppose the illogical and erroneous decisions of the government and offer its alternatives, that is the content. Form: here are the details: there may be a connection with an already valid one [sutarties]If you don’t want to, you can’t formalize what we did at the beginning and we did it quite successfully, ”said S. Skvernelis.
It is true that the way the LSDP now opposes the government, he criticized.
So far, the Social Democratic faction in the Seimas is more likely to vote than the rulers.
“Until now, the Social Democratic faction in the Seimas votes more often than the rulers, they support the rulers. We will see what it will be like next, ”said S. Skvernelis.
Agree not to agree on everything
It is already foreseeable that on some issues, such as the partnership or the convention for the legalization of violence against women, the Social Democrats vote in the same way as the rulers.
But this, according to S. Skvernelis, is not an obstacle to go hand in hand.
“We have already spoken between the three groups, saying that there will be issues where our opinions will be completely different. That is what we are stating. <...>.
But if there are less differences than overlaps, we could probably work and not be the main obstacle here, ”he said, adding that common ground can be found with the LSDP in terms of the economy, public administration or public sector.

When asked if the LSDP, which had elected a new president, had become stronger, Skvernel agreed that it was important, but did not strengthen the party.
“It just came to our attention then. The content will be filled by politics itself, whether the Social Democrats, like the left-wing party, are particularly radical in terms of positions of value, even economic ones, or not,” he said.
See potential
If the Social Democrats were strengthened, the “peasants”, according to R. Karbauskis, would only benefit.
“If the Social Democratic Party gets stronger, then we will have a stronger potential partner. It is difficult to expect that we will ever have a partnership with liberals or conservatives who are already liberal.
The left of the social democrats, if it continues to speak out in concrete terms, will make our association possible.
The conditionality of the Social Democrats, if it continues to manifest itself in concrete terms, will make our association possible. ” 15 minutes commented.
The politician said he welcomed the news that the LSDP had elected a new leader: “I am pleased that the party finally has a leader and hope that we finally have a partner in the opposition.”
But he also began to fear that “the Social Democrats would not become liberal.”
Disagreements with “employees” don’t interfere either
According to R. Karbauskis, it would be difficult to agree with them: “It would be difficult for us to agree if they went over to the liberal side, if traditional values became irrelevant to them.”

But maybe it is still possible.
“We are in a coalition with the Labor Party faction in the Seimas, we have a lot of disagreements on some issues, but it is does not mix we have a coalition in the opposition.
In the same way, I think [būtų galima bendradarbiauti] and with the Social Democrats ”, commented R. Karbauskis.
Ultimately, according to him, everything will depend on the strategy and direction that the new leader of the LSDP chooses or the party will follow.
The agreement on the leader would change
Opposition “peasants” and “workers” signed a cooperation agreement in late March.
The Seimas factions agreed to have a common opposition leader who would change and be elected by consensus.
It was decided that a representative of the “peasants” will occupy the position of leader of the opposition for 5 sessions of the Seimas, a representative of the “workers” – 3.
If other factions join the coalition, it has been decided to reconsider the issue of leadership change.
