According to the municipal report, the sculptural group “Nueva Generación” has been part of the artist’s project for several years. Snowman figures are already well known not only by gallery visitors in Lithuania, but also on the international art scene. The Kuriu Vilnius program was initiated and supported by the Municipality of Vilnius. All the works of the program are available here.
“Despite its fun and engaging form, this project is a serious art study,” says T. Daukša. – Consider the difference between faith and knowledge. I am interested in the moment when what is believed becomes unquestionable. An example of such a transformation could be the testimonies of people who have encountered them in popular television shows and documentaries about mystical and paranormal phenomena, including the snowmen themselves. But in the end, this contradiction between the real and the false loses its relevance and the object itself and the narrative it creates become the most important ”.
The artist offers two versions of the appearance of the figurines: according to the first, the figurines were found by a person who believed that they were made and left by a snowman. He began to exchange statuettes for food and thus accumulated a considerable collection of snowmen of various sizes and colors; the second version of the origin of the sculptures claims that the artist created the objects himself, but says that he received them from a person who claims they were donated by a snowman. The artist presents himself as the author of these artifacts and as a mediator between the viewer and the mysterious creature that created the sculptures.
The sculptures create a variety of situations from the daily life of the Snow People, revealing more and more information about their daily activities, rituals, family relationships, community hierarchy, interpersonal communication and more. details of life. Viewers are also encouraged to create their own stories about the life of mysterious snowmen from clues and snippets.
The Snow People project has become one of the objects of T. Daukša’s doctoral research in art. 2019 After completing his doctoral studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, the artist became one of the youngest to obtain a doctor of art degree in Lithuania. Having started his creative activity from painting, in recent years the artist has been creating sculptural objects and conducting conceptual research. The New Town sculptures are the artist’s first work in a public space.
Gallo Gallery, which represents the artist, works with young artists, including emerging artists and young artists already established in the field of contemporary art. Launched more than a decade ago, the gallery primarily represented painters exclusively, but as its activities expanded, its artistic staff was supplemented by creators from other art forms.
