In a letter to the government, the association emphasized that residents entertain themselves in the mountains when snow falls outside, while ski resorts cannot operate.

“It is publicly announced and widely known that these days people flock to ski in public places, parks, on many hills, where it is difficult to guarantee a safe environment where the virus does not spread.

Meanwhile, outdoor ski resorts that can provide all the necessary security measures to prevent the spread of the virus. <...>, cannot operate due to government restrictions.

Alpine skiing, as currently allowed in the park, cycling, cross-country skiing and the like, is an individual sport that does not involve close physical contact. For this reason, it is necessary to decide urgently to resume the activities of the ski centers ”, urges the association.

As far as she knows, ski resorts in neighboring countries and other foreign countries currently operate with advance reservations, limited customers, and therefore guarantee safe flows of skiers.

“Countries that have been banned in the past are preparing to resume it. This confirms that ski resort activities do not contribute to the spread of the virus.

On the contrary, the activities of the ski centers help people not to choose in uncontrolled and inappropriate public places and contribute strongly to the need for physical activity, which is currently very necessary for all people ”, reads the address .

Ski resort activities do not contribute to the spread of the virus.

The association emphasizes that the ski resorts operate only during the “cold” period of the year, which according to Lithuanian climatic conditions is very short. And the revenue collected during this time is used for staff maintenance, infrastructure maintenance, loan repayments, rents, and utilities throughout the calendar year.

So now that ski resorts are unable to operate due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are financial difficulties.

“Currently, after almost half of winter, the ski resorts are experiencing significant financial difficulties due to the inability to operate. The renewal of the activities of the ski centers would contribute to the reduction of the financial difficulties of the ski centers and the reduction of the state financial aid to the ski centers ”, says the Association of Ski Centers.

According to the association, licensed ski resorts could operate with the following safety requirements:

  • very limited number of clients. The services are provided only with prior reservation on the online platform reserving a specific schedule;
  • maximum uninterrupted ski time: 2 hours;

  • no outdoor ski resort in Lithuania has a chair lift that rises in an enclosed cabin or sits alongside other people;
  • in line with the ski lifts, if they are formed, a minimum safety distance of 2 meters between the skiers. Skiers will wait in lines formed one after another, divination is prohibited;
  • additional queue control in elevators. Only skiers can stay longer than 2 minutes. Long queues in elevators;
  • customers were also wearing face and nose scarves / sleeves, gloves and ski goggles before the quarantine was announced, so there will be no difficulty in controlling customers wearing mouth and nose masks. We will remove from the ski slopes those who do not meet this requirement.

The Association of Ski Centers brings together Lithuania’s outdoor ski centers: Anykščiai “Kalita” ski center; Lithuanian Winter Sports Center, Ignalina, Plungė Mortos Kalns Ski Base, Plungė District; Aukštagirė ski center, Šilalė district. Utriai Hill, Lapiai Community Center ski slopes, Klaipeda district. Liepkalnis Ski Center in Vilnius.
