He stressed that the positions of the president and the prime minister are coordinated before each EVS meeting.
“It just came to our attention then. The President and the Prime Minister meet, speak before the Council, after the Council, coordinate actions, opinions and approaches. The exchange of information is taking place and is taking place without any problem, ”A. Skaisgirytė told LRT radio on Thursday.
He also argued that a decision on the EVS issue in the Seimas would not be a priority.
“It is probably not a priority task for the Seimas to decide on this issue. In fact, the current system of representation of the EVS is well established, it works, it is not clear why it should be changed,” said the presidential adviser.
“If the issue reaches the Seimas, it would probably be necessary for the majority of the Seimas to change that decision, and later the constitutional aspects would probably come into play.” I don’t know if this is an issue the Seimas should be busy with right now, “said A. Skaisgirytė.
The ruling conservatives are considering passing a law in the Seimas that provides for Lithuania to be represented in the EVS not by the president but by the prime minister.
The initiators argue that the issues discussed at the summits are largely a matter for the government. There is also no possibility of ensuring that the president of the EVS complies with the mandate approved by the Seimas and the Government, in addition, the president does not participate in the activities of the European parties.
Critics of the initiative say that conservatives are applying double standards because they have left their place on EVS to President Dalia Grybauskaitė, whom they support.
In addition, the president has constitutional powers to address key foreign policy issues and represent the state.
