“President Gitanas Nausėda spoke about A. Navalnas and about the completely unacceptable situation when a poisoned person, an opposition figure, a critic of the Kremlin returns to his homeland and is arrested right here at the airport, is tried at a station from the militia and imprisoned for 30 days. Information appeared yesterday that Comrade Sobol is also detained. When this is happening on the outskirts of the European Union, I am very concerned, “A. Skaisgirytė told LRT radio.
The country’s chief adviser said there was support for Mr. Nausėda’s proposal to impose sanctions on the Russian officials responsible for the arrest of A. Navalnas at the EVS.
“The president’s idea was supported by many countries: the Baltic countries, northern and central Europe, Germany and the Netherlands. “It is good that next week a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council will be held, where the foreign ministers of the European Union will specifically discuss how to respond to the arrest of A. Navalnas,” he said.
A. Skaisgirytė also pointed out that for sanctions to be imposed on Russian officials at the level of the European Union, such a step must be approved by all EU member states.
“The sanctions must be approved by all the countries of the European Union. Then there is the next stage, is to name those specific individuals and the justification must be very clear to them. And in this case, it will probably be very clear why they are they impose sanctions. So there is still a bit of investigative work, “said A. Skaisgirytė.
