Širinskienė: not only did he suggest us to look for another candidacy, but he even indicated which one should be

“It just came to our attention then. We, as an opposition group, have even been told what this candidacy should be. You pointed out all day yesterday through the media. For us, that behavior is certainly not appropriate for the position. Usually, in democracies, the opposition is formed and self-determined, without specifying a position. The position refers to the opposition only in the East, Belarus or Russia, where there is always an attempt to create a friendly opposition to imitate democracy. I really believe this and I hope that Lithuania is not a country where the position decides what the opposition should have and how the formation should be formed, “A. Širinskienė told LRT radio.

“Valstietė” also confirmed the words of the LVŽS leader that other Seimas vice-presidential candidates that the “peasants” of Aušrinė Norkienė do not promise to offer.

“We don’t see any possibility of looking for another candidate or we don’t promise to simply obey the dictatorship’s position, which, in our head, is really inappropriate in a democracy,” he said.

The decision on Friday of Seimas president Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen to nominate Andrius Mazuronis, the representative of the smallest opposition faction, to the vice-presidents of the Seimas surprised A. Širinskienė.
“It is a very strange situation to see factions three times smaller than the Labor faction, which has vice presidents. And at that time, we received such indications that we may not need those posts and we have an opposition leader,” he said.

ELTA recalls that in the first session of the new mandate, the Seimas elected the president of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, its first conservative deputy Jurgis Razmas and the deputy member of the Labor Factor A. Mazuronis.

The candidate for the position of vice-president of the Seimas proposed by the peasants is currently Aušrinė Norkienė. However, after meeting with R. Karbauskis on Monday, V. Čmilytė-Nielsen declared that the LVŽS faction should look for another candidate for vice-presidents of parliament.

At that time, the LSDP promised to nominate G. Paluckas, but after the situation on Friday, he responded to the charge and handed over his candidacy to his party partner Julius Sabatauskas.
