Sinkevičius, who is campaigning for Savickas, says he has received the consent of the president of the European Commission.

“Yes, I have the consent,” V. Sinkevičius told BNS.

The Code of Conduct for Commissioners stipulates that European Commissioners can participate in national politics as party members or as other social partners, including in national electoral campaigns, provided this does not impede their ability to hold positions in the EC and that they inform the Head of the Commission.

The obligation to resign is provided only if the Commissioner participates directly in the elections or actively participates in the electoral campaign.

In all other cases, in the absence of a political campaign, EC members must refrain from making public political statements.

V. Sinkevičius’s spokesperson Egidijus Jurgelionis told BNS that EC Director Ursula von der Leyen had received his consent to participate in the national election campaign in early September.

“As required by the Code of Conduct for Commissioners, the Commissioner has informed the President of the European Commission and received a response from the President on 4 September that it may be part of a political campaign. The Commissioner has no plans to participate in debates or electoral programs, “he said.

The EC delegation has confirmed that this information is correct.

V. Sinkevičius has suspended his membership in the LVŽS due to his duties, previously he headed the Vilnius section of the party.
