Electricity prices for the population have increased by an average of 14.7 percent since January.

Soon, residents will choose their own electricity provider.

It was previously announced that the authorities had finally agreed to the full liberalization of the electricity supply market.

It is claimed that not only Lithuanian companies but also other Baltic companies want to supply electricity to the population. All of them promise to offer attractive prices.

The population consuming the most electricity will have to make a decision on an independent electricity provider in early December.

“This change is very important for all consumers and electricity providers, as it will ensure a more competitive electricity market and increasingly diverse services for electricity consumers. (…) Today we start with this information campaign, because an informed consumer is one of the “drivers” of the success of this change, – said the Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.

According to him, more than half of the EU countries have already liberalized electricity markets for both domestic consumers and businesses.

The liberalization of the supply market will take place in three stages. Starting next year, consumers who consume more than 5 MWh per year will be able to choose the desired provider, since 2022, more than 1 MWh, and since 2023, all other consumers.

In July, Ignitis will send a letter to the first group about the contract, which will expire on January 1, 2021, and information on the possibility of choosing an electricity supplier. With your consent, the Energy Distribution Operator (ESO) will transmit the contact and consumption details to the suppliers, who will present their offers. Consumers will have until December 10 to choose the most suitable provider and sign a new contract.

Without an independent provider by January 1, ESO will continue to supply electricity to consumers at a price of 25%. higher than the Nord Pool exchange price. Vulnerable consumers will receive more favorable prices.

“The guaranteed price of the supply is also provided by law and at the price of energy exchange, applying an additional coefficient of 1.25. It really makes sense and it is valuable to choose the best providers and services from independent providers, ”said Mindaugas Keizeris, ESO General Manager.

According to him, the population is already choosing independent suppliers, but the market, which is not limited by the monopoly, will be fully formed by 2023.

The purchase and supply price for electricity is approximately 48 percent. final prices, the other part – transmission, distribution and services of general interest and other components – will remain regulated.

The State Energy Regulatory Council (VERT) says it will continue to closely monitor the correct application of the price components established by the regulator to suppliers.

“It is also important for us to assure all residents that the price on the stock exchange is also monitored by all regulators (…) so that there is no manipulation in the energy exchange and I can assure you that the activity will continue”, said VERT President Inga Žilienė.

According to VERT data, 27 independent electricity providers are already providing services to companies.

“The same providers have expressed their desire to provide services to the population. The interest comes not only from registered providers in Lithuania, but also from registered providers in other Baltic countries. They are very interested in this market segment. Talk to potential suppliers, they promise to offer really attractive prices to residents. We will see how they deliver on their promises next year, “said I. Žilienė, President of VERT.

The Council publishes the complete list of providers, so I. Žilienė recommends that residents check whether providers provide services before signing contracts.

Currently, the majority of the population buys electricity from a public provider, Ignitis grupė, a company owned by the state company, and the price is regulated by VERT.

VERT agreed on the Consumer Information Plan prepared by ESO on the liberalization of the electricity market and its process. The campaign will continue throughout the period of liberalization, until 2023.

The consumer information plan provides information channels, including the website www.pasirinkitetiekeja.lt, and formats.

Consumers will also be informed about the benefits of choosing an independent electricity provider, how to do it by encouraging active market participation and more favorable offers.
