The eruption of a volcano in North Sumatra province lasted about 12 minutes, the local geological agency reported.
“The volcanic material has reached a height of 4,500 meters; the eruption lasted quite a long time, “Armen Putra, head of the Sinabunge monitoring post, told AFP.
A photo released by the agency shows a column of thick, dark smoke rising from the crater. Clouds of ash and smoke have reportedly drifted about a mile from the summit.
The evacuation was not announced because the volcanic material did not reach the nearest villages. There were also no reports of disrupted flights.
However, the services urged people to avoid being within 5 km of the crater. This area has been uninhabited for many years after the volcano was activated.
The 2,460-meter-high Sinabung has been dormant for centuries, but woke up in 2010. Two people died during that eruption. It erupted again in 2013 and has been extremely active ever since. At least 16 people died in the 2014 eruption, and in 2016, the eruption claimed seven lives.
More than 17 thousand. The island of Indonesia has almost 130 active volcanoes.
The country falls into the Pacific “ring of fire”, a collision zone of tectonic plates with high seismic and volcanic activity.
