Šimonytė: we don’t see any reason to relax the quarantine, we will be able to talk about it only after Easter

“The epidemiological situation is, unfortunately, such that we see no reason to talk about additional releases in the near future. And it is so good that representatives of commercial companies managed to agree on a secure algorithm that would allow those companies to start operating. ”I. Šimonytė told reporters on Wednesday about the possibility of opening shopping centers.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the incidence of Covid-19 in some Lithuanian municipalities is growing rapidly.

“Therefore, we will not have the opportunity to consider additional layoffs in the coming weeks. And we will be able to speak about the discussion on these issues only after Easter. And only on the condition that the epidemiological situation at least stabilizes during that time.” said I. Šimonytė.

The Prime Minister hopes that in the “yellow” municipalities, where the incidence of Covid-19 does not exceed 200 cases per 100,000. population within 14 days, you will be able to maintain a stable situation. However, it does not rule out the possibility of stricter quarantine decisions in the near future.

“It just came to our attention then. If additional restrictions will be required in the operations of those currently in force, that is, tightening the quarantine, the Government will still discuss. If such decisions are necessary, they will be taken tomorrow or Friday morning” assured I. Šimonytė.

He could not specify what could be specifically tightened, but is considering introducing local quarantine in the most affected municipalities.

“Now we have two headaches. A headache is the divergent dynamics in different municipalities and the risks posed by the Easter holidays due to the additional movement.

Another problem is the South African virus strain, which we have so far identified in two cases as unrelated. However, a dozen more cases are being investigated. Then, we will have to harmonize those measurements to be able to locate the spread of that variety.

If we detect such a spread in some municipalities, we will still want to take additional measures to destroy the virus strain where we found it, ”said the Prime Minister.

The Cabinet of Ministers did not change the quarantine requirements at its meeting on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Živilė Gudlevičienė’s adviser told LRT Radio on Wednesday that the government should consider introducing local quarantines on Wednesday, as the epidemiological situation in the country is not improving.

However, this topic is not on the meeting’s agenda.

The quarantine in Lithuania is valid until March 31.
