“Municipalities should not create their own priority queues. If some municipalities simply allow people not to choose a vaccine, which is unfortunately the case, and move the priority line faster, that is the reality and cannot be ignored. However, I do not think it is good for municipalities to create their own order of priorities, because that would already be the case here.

Earlier this week, the Vilnius City Municipality planned to start registering Vilnius residents aged 55 and over for vaccination, but withdrew it due to the government’s call to focus on older people.

According to the mayor of the capital, Remigijus Šimašius, it is no longer possible to wait: the main hospital treating COVID-19 patients in Vilnius occupies almost all the beds for these patients, and many Vilnius residents who are invited to receive the vaccine AstraZeneca refuse this vaccine.

“It just came to our knowledge then. If this is usually the case because this vaccine is administered, some people want another one. So today we have about 2,000 vacancies, how many people have not registered, although they could receive that vaccine,” said R Šimašius at a short press conference on Monday.
