Šimonytė: The homeland union knows how to oppose

“I look forward to a different Seimas, where there will be more opportunities to speak than there were in this Seimas. Probably because one of the factions had such great power, at least at first, that he didn’t see a great need to hear other opinions from people who they also represent the Lithuanian people and they should also bring them together. I would hope that even in this Seimas, even if someone were to form a ruling majority and a government, there would simply be more need to take into account different opinions.

The factions are likely to be smaller than they are now, or at least at the beginning of the period the largest faction in the current Seimas, which means that both the formation and maintenance of coalitions is now that there is something not he’s with us, he’s definitely against us, ”said I. Šimonytimony on Delfi’s show.

According to I. Šimonytė, minority government is not the main target, as someone might have understood. This is just an extreme option.

“I think a minority government could be an extreme decision and those words of mine can be taken out of context. It was certainly not a statement as the only one acceptable to us, not even a very real option. This could simply be the case, as there are many issues on which it is not difficult for politicians from all walks of life to agree, as the debate has probably shown that both education and other solutions, for example, the best way to use the financial support of the European Union In the coming periods, there will not be as many of those disputes, so agreeing to do a concrete job is more of a format than a coalition if it is not maintained well in some way. But, of course, in the first place there are natural partners who are natural partners of the same Patria Union and this is undoubtedly a liberal one, but now, apparently, speculation is very thankless. Because if someone can form an effective majority very quickly, that is what needs to be gathered here about a minority government. There could only be one extreme case here, “said I. Šimonytė.

When asked about the election results, I. Šimonytė said it is too early to celebrate victory after the first round. We need to wait for the results of the second round.

There is a conservative who knows how to be in the opposition, I would like to emphasize that, because there are, I think, parties that I don’t know or would know how to do in the opposition.

“It just came to our knowledge then. We know very well which constituencies go first and we have probably already had more than one election when, after the cities’ votes have been counted, that picture changes quite a bit. I would say here only has counted a small part. I should point out that while the overall turnout was not high, turnout was even higher in some districts, like the old town or Antakalnis. The old town is even much larger than in 2016. I think they are good news of this half, but there are two. And we will count when both halves are finished, because the first pause has been in our history more than once. After the first half, people decide to try the winners crown too soon and then the second half adjusts the results, ”said I. Šimonytė.

When asked what would happen if the Conservatives remained in the opposition for another four years, I. Šimonytė stated that everything would depend on who that opposition would be and what its weight would be in influencing the decisions made.

“To think that the opposition cannot do anything … The opposition is doing a very rhythmic job. It is true that in Lithuania it is sometimes imagined that the opposition has to work for power. It doesn’t work for the government, but it protects the Lithuanian people from the fact that the government’s decisions are somehow not very calibrated to one side. And I think that is very important. It doesn’t matter who the opposition is: if it’s us or someone else. (…) I cannot guess what can bring what changes, I think and the formation of coalitions can lead to various changes in the parties, here are the steps that follow later. If sometimes some division of positions occurs which causes a variety of changes, I do not think it is specific to the Conservative Party. It is simply the conservatives who know how to be in the opposition, I would like to emphasize that, because there are, I think, parties in the opposition that I do not know or know what to do. (…) I will not specify it, but the Union of the Fatherland knows how to be in the opposition ”, said I. Šimonytė.

The TS-LKD leader also assessed which party would be out of the way and no agreement could be reached.

“I think there are parties with which it is very difficult to imagine finding something to talk about and there are parties whose declared values, or at least the values declared by their leaders, really surpass everyone for whom we are, and therefore probably even if we should to have a similar approach to any other element in some area, it would certainly not be enough to talk about serious work and shared values. (…) It is easier to name here not even the Lithuanian Poles, but the party of Mr. Tomaševskis. I don’t think that represent the values of the Lithuanian Poles, but rather the values of Mr Tomaševskis and his colleagues. I would say that this is the most difficult case, “said I. Šimonytė.

“The peasants, it seems to me, have expressed their preconceived opinion, I do not know how much it forces them, but I will not hide that we have probably had more than one opportunity in this Seimas to see that there are many issues on which opinions differ, at least until now. . Of course, it all depends a lot on the type of people in the Seimas. Who people will really give confidence to, not only as a party, but also the candidates of that party, because the lists are ordered and the result of ranking the lists is also the message of the electorate. When we have all this knowledge, we can read it, “said I. Šimonytė.
