Šimonytė: The homeland union knows how to oppose

“I look forward to a different Seimas, where there will be more opportunities to speak than there were in this Seimas. Probably because one of the factions had such great power, at least at first, that he didn’t see a great need to hear other opinions from people who they also represent the Lithuanian people and they should also bring them together. I would hope that even in this Seimas, even if someone were to form a ruling majority and a government, there would simply be more need to take into account different opinions.

When asked about the election results, I. Šimonytė said it is too early to celebrate victory after the first round. We need to wait for the results of the second round.

“It just came to our knowledge then. We know very well which constituencies go first and we have probably already had more than one election when, after the cities’ votes have been counted, that picture changes quite a bit. I would say here only has counted a small part. I should point out that while the overall turnout was not high, turnout was even higher in some districts, like the old town or Antakalnis. The old town is even much larger than in 2016. I think they are good news of this half, but there are two. When asked what would happen if the Conservatives remained in the opposition for another four years, I. Šimonytė stated that everything would depend on who that opposition would be and what its weight would be in influencing the decisions made.

“To think that the opposition cannot do anything … The opposition is doing a very rhythmic job. It is true that in Lithuania it is sometimes imagined that the opposition has to work for power. It doesn’t work for the government, but it protects the Lithuanian people from the fact that the government’s decisions are somehow not very calibrated to one side. And I think that is very important. It doesn’t matter who the opposition is: if it’s us or someone else. (…) I cannot guess what can bring what changes, I think and the formation of coalitions can lead to various changes in the parties, here are the steps that follow later. If sometimes some division of positions occurs which causes a variety of changes, I do not think it is specific to the Conservative Party. It is simply the conservatives who know how to be in the opposition, I would like to emphasize that, because there are, I think, parties in the opposition that I do not know or know what to do. Who people will really give confidence to, not only as a party, but also the candidates of that party, because the lists are ordered and the result of ranking the lists is also the message of the electorate.
