“This is just another political step by the ‘peasant’ president in the context of the election, which has absolutely nothing to do with the rule of law and the rule of law.” It seems that the struggle, initially fueled by ambitions, is being replaced by despair: the desire to desperately punish Vilnius for the fact that the city’s public spaces are for the people and the joy of the people, and the commission of government does not dance according to the song commissioned by the peasant leader
He says he met with Mindaugas Kvietkauskas, the culture minister who leads the government group in Lukiškės square, on Tuesday morning to discuss possible further steps. This group proposes to the municipality to modify the loan contract signed five years ago to include additional guarantees of the law on the representation and commemorative function of the square approved by the Seimas, provided that its accent must be the monument to Vytis.
“We discussed the municipality’s proposals on how the draft loan contract submitted could be improved to protect the interests of Vilnius residents and ensure the square’s functionality as a public urban space,” he said.
The municipality was given until September 28 to consider the proposals and include them in the new agreement, otherwise the minister also promised to propose to the Government and the Seimas the change of governor of the square.
The three-decade debate over the management of Lukiškės Square and commemorative accents intensified this summer, when Vilnius municipal authorities decided in late June to install an artificial beach with hammocks and a volleyball court, which was dismantled in early June. September.
Critics of the idea claim that the project is not suitable for Lukiškės Square, because it is historically important for the memory of the country’s resistance struggles, and the public and politicians were not consulted during the construction of the beach. In response to the situation, the Seimas passed a special law on Lukiškės Square in the summer, stipulating that it is the main representative square of the country with the Vytis Monument.
