Even before the reconstruction of this complex transportation hub began, it was promised that the works would be finished on September 1, when the majority of the population returned to the city and the number of cars increased.
In the summer, Kaunas residents were used to the inconvenience and new routes, but the start of the new school year is alarming.
There are reasons to worry: the entrances to the old town can be really great.
Advised to avoid a place
“As planned, from September 1 it will be possible to drive over the Castle Ring Crossing and the P.Vileišis Bridge, but until mid-September capital repairs will continue on Šauklių and Šv.Gertrūdos streets,” said Aloyzas Pakalniškis, Director of the City Management Department of the Municipality of Kaunas.
It is also planned to allow traffic on these streets, but with only 50 percent capacity, one lane in each direction.
According to A. Pakalniškis, at the beginning of the school year, traffic on city streets usually intensifies, so drivers are advised to assess the situation and avoid this place until the works are completely finished.
The representative of the municipality also announced good news: as of September 1, traffic will be allowed on P. Kalpoko Street, as its renovation is rapidly approaching the end.
This means that drivers will have a very important connection between Jonava Street and Savanorių Avenue.
It is necessary to coordinate actions
“The company’s specialists are working very hard and according to the plan they will start traffic at the Kaunas castle roundabout on September 1,” promised Giedrė Samulionytė-Lekavičienė, communications specialist from Kauno tiltai.
Traffic participants will be able to drive again on the repaired P.Vileišis Bridge.
“We will continue works on Šv.Gertrūdos and Šauklių streets until mid-September, until single-lane traffic is allowed,” confirmed G.Samulionytė-Lekavičienė.
According to her, the project is not only carried out by Kauno tiltai, so the issues that are constantly coordinated and raised are resolved together with other companies employed by the client, archaeologists who carry out excavations and investigations.
“We are aware of drivers’ concerns about increased traffic at the beginning of the school year and the challenges it poses. We also hope that drivers appreciate the importance of change and the importance of greater safety,” said the company representative. .
The image will definitely change
Vigintas Lukošius, Chief of the Highway Police Board of the Kaunas County Police Commissariat, believes that the intensity of traffic will increase significantly in September; After the holidays, the residents of Kaunas will return to work and educational institutions.
“There will be an increase in the number of people who are not used to the intensity of traffic in a big city, so more technical traffic accidents are likely to occur on the streets,” predicted V. Lukošius.
While traffic on city streets may be lower than a few years ago due to the pandemic and telecommuting, it will undoubtedly be higher than in the summer months.
It is necessary to remember that pedestrian traffic will also increase on city streets, which continues to be a source of greater danger from the consequences of traffic accidents.
Both drivers and pedestrians will need special vigilance not only in the first weeks of September, but also throughout the autumn, to face the dark time of year, ”warned V. Lukošius.
The chief of the Traffic Police has no doubt that street repairs will also have an impact on traffic and cargo congestion, which is why he urged drivers to be patient, attentive and respectful of each other.
