– Sigita, tell us, how did the idea of moving from house to apartment come about when many families simply have the opposite dream?
– In fact, the change has matured a long time ago. There used to be talk of maybe having to move houses, but at the time, I couldn’t think of leaving my beloved home and generally moving in with all my flowers and other things.
But figuratively, life has happened. The man started working in China, and we have three children, a house, a large yard, various activities, so covering everything for one has become too difficult, especially when you want to do everything with quality. Something still remains abandoned.

We had thoughts of moving, for example, those thoughts were present as we walked through the city. We think about how good it would be if we didn’t have to go anywhere. We first came up with the idea to experiment and rent a house in the city center and see how we would live.

I started looking for an apartment to rent in the area where we imagine we wanted to live, and since we have three children, we needed a 3-bedroom apartment so that everyone had their own space.
What scared me the most were the rental prices, because it is expensive to rent an apartment in the center of Vilnius, especially a larger one. Since inspecting apartments has become my hobby, I thought about seeing which apartments are for sale. I activated a saved search and told my husband that he had found an apartment for us. And she offered to go see her. It was not the first time that a man said that, but I never went to see him, but this time it was different: I left and that house became ours.
There were so many practical reasons why we decided to do it, and we exchanged a large house with a patio for an apartment in the city center. For example, I don’t need to be divided between agricultural activities and children, children study in the city, so they sleep more, they don’t have to drive anywhere and everything is within walking distance. We have much more comfort and time for ourselves and our activities.
– Did you live far from Vilnius?
– We lived in a very good place, according to real estate agents – 7 minutes by car from the Plaza de la Catedral. However, I noticed such a thing that when the older children went to school, the younger ones to kindergarten, I began to miss people a lot. Everyone goes to work and you sit between the four walls of the house.
We are also happy to make that decision due to these nuances, so I do not feel sorry for our house today, where we spent 13 years. On the contrary, I am very happy.

Do you have thoughts of ever going home?
– It is currently rented and at least now I have no idea of going back. Friends stayed in our old residential area, so I often walk the streets where we used to live and realize I have no desire to go back.

Yes, there was a lack of work in the land, the garden and the orchard in the spring, but I found an alternative – the window sills, in which I can have a mini garden and flowers. Also, this summer we spend more time with parents, which is great too.
– Perhaps you discovered something new with the changes in the house?
– I have discovered that I am the person who needs daily communication not only with family members but also with other people. And as for the house, I realized that that comfortable life does not require many squares, large spaces and separate rooms.
Family life takes place more or less in that common space and the bedrooms are only for sleeping. This has been confirmed. A cozy and comfortable life is also possible in a smaller space.

– Did you have to work hard to make your new home comfortable and welcoming?
– No, we moved to an apartment already rebuilt and tidy, which is in a century-old house. What we did was change the color of the walls and repair the bathroom. This last job cost a lot of nerves (Serie). The plumbing had to be replaced and we installed a shower instead of a bathtub.
– When you live in an apartment, you have to have very close neighbors, perhaps to accept certain sounds. Is there no inconvenience to moving out of the house?
– The thick walls are silent, so there is definitely no noise. The only discomfort is the common ducts, so you can sometimes smell the food produced by your neighbors, but there are solutions for those things too.
The neighbors are friendly and interesting, and the most important thing is who you will be and how you will behave, you can expect that response. I am open to all communication with all people.
– And how did your children react? Did you like those changes?
– There was anger and diverse reactions, I think the adolescents really felt the feelings in the house where they grew up. But socialization for them now is more than living in a house.
