The Šiauliai Regional Court delivered a judgment in a criminal case in which Rolandas Norušaitis, a 44-year-old resident of the Joniškis district, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon without a firearm, three firearms, ammunition and violation of the public order. A man who has already been convicted of various crimes more than once has pleaded guilty.

The case was orally examined after a brief examination of the evidence and in accordance with all the security measures required by the quarantine conditions in force in the country after the pandemic. R. Norušaitis is arrested, his participation in the court hearing was secured using remote sensing.

While transporting the arsenal of weapons from one hiding place to another by bicycle, the man bought 7-8 liters of beer and drank it in the Joniškis city park.

According to the case, in the late afternoon of August 19, 2019, police officers received a phone message that a man was shooting in the Joniškis city park. Rushed police soon arrested R. Norušaitis with evidence. The detainee was intoxicated.

During the examination of this criminal case, R. Norušaitis fully confessed. He said he had been interested in ammunition and weapons for a long time, collecting them both online and from other sources. The defendant did not mention the price of the weapons.

He said he bought an industrially manufactured smooth-barreled rifle, revolver, pistol, multi-caliber ammunition and a Mauser dagger 5-8 years ago and kept them at home and in the field. However, approximately two weeks before the incident in the Joniškis city park, he moved in with a childhood friend and took the weapons, ammunition, and daggers from his home.

A couple of weeks later, on August 19, it was decided to move and hide the weapons, ammunition, and daggers elsewhere, in the territory of the Joniškis Gardens. The hunting rifle was dismantled and all weapons, ammunition, and daggers were put in the backpack. He went to Joniškis by bicycle at about 8 in the morning. R. Norušaitis stated that he did not intend to sell such weapons, ammunition and daggers, but instead transported them to hide elsewhere.

On the way to Joniškis, he bought 7-8 liters of beer and drank it in the Joniškis city park until 9 at night. No outsiders were seen in the park. He pulled a hunting rifle out of his backpack, gathered it up, and fired twice.

The defendant could not explain why he did it, he himself speculated on alcohol.

The defendant was unable to explain why he did so, and he himself speculated that it was likely due to alcohol. R.Norušaitis said he saw two girls only after the shots were fired, but did not tell them anything.

Two friends who were close to R. Norušaitis at the time of the crime gave their testimony. The minor testified in court that an unknown man came to the park on a bicycle, from which he continued to fall. Witnesses also saw that a stranger has a rifle. When he removed the gun from his shoulders, his friends hid behind the trees and continued to observe everything. Soon the man fired one shot into the ground and one into the air. After a few more moments, he sat down on his bike and drove off. One of the witnesses immediately called the police, Vytautas Jončas, assistant president of the Šiauliai Regional Court of Public Relations and Media, said in a statement released on Thursday.

The court recognized R. Norušaitis’s full confession and sincere compassion as a mitigating circumstance. The aggravating circumstance of his responsibility was that he committed the crime while intoxicated with alcohol and this influenced the commission of crimes. The court stated that the crime committed by R. Norušaitis was fully proven by the testimony of the accused, witnesses and other materials in the case.

R. Norušaitis has been sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison, to be executed by the correctional center.

For the crimes committed, R. Norušaitis was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison, which he must serve in a correctional center. Once the convict’s weapons take effect, a dozen rounds of ammunition will be transferred to the Lithuanian Weapons Fund by court decision.
