Due to the ongoing pandemic, the procedures for foreign drivers to obtain work visas in Lithuania have been extended to half a year.

According to the report, Linava has repeatedly called on the Government, the Ministries of Transport, Social Security and Labor and the Ministry of the Interior to address this issue and amend the legislation that establishes maximum limits (quotas) for Ukrainian and Belarusian drivers to work. in the transport sector of Lithuania and other non-European Union (EU) countries.

According to the general secretary of Linava, Zenonas Buivydas, there has always been a shortage of drivers in the transport sector, but a particularly difficult situation has arisen since January this year, when new restrictions came into force and only 11,6 thousand people can come to work to Lithuania per year. drivers from third countries.

“Obviously, this is too small a number, it doesn’t satisfy the transport sector market.

In January and February alone, more than 30% has already been used. These quotas: 4042 long-distance drivers have already come to work from abroad, and the remaining numbers will simply dissolve in the coming months.

For this reason, we strongly invite our locals, who are looking for work, to work as drivers in transport companies, at least temporarily, and we ask the state institutions to review the established requirements ”, says Z. Buivydas.

The association points out that in February 23.9 thousand people were registered in the Employment Service. vacant positions and the transport and storage sector ranks second in terms of staff shortages.

Currently, the number of employees sought in transport companies is 15.6%. the total number of employees wanted in Lithuania.
