On Friday evening, the new Seimas elected the new leader of the Seimas, the leader of the Liberal Movement Viktorija Čmilytė – Nielsen. After this decision, the Seimas must approve at least two of its deputies, the vice-presidents of the Seimas.
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen said after the vote that he would nominate two vice-presidents tonight. But their names could not be released.
“There is no time to celebrate, today I will present at least two deputies from Seimas. And I can’t say who they are, “he told the media.
There are no more than 7 vice-presidents of the Seimas. At least two members of the opposition must be vice-presidents of the Seimas.
“After consulting with the factions, today I present a candidate for the office and another for the opposition,” said V. Čmilytė Nielsen.
These nominations must also be decided by secret ballot. V. Čmilytė-Nielsen plans to have six MPs in total.
The first candidate is Jurgis Razma
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen nominated Conservative Representative Jurgis Razma for the first time.
Mr. Razma agreed to run for the position and was given time to introduce himself.
“No matter how long this masked year lasts, so maybe we can call the period that we have, I think we will be as important in our society, in its history, as we can be insightful for its benefit,” Razma said in his speech.
The politician affirmed that the agenda of the Seimas is the “agenda of Lithuania”.
“A little experience allows me to say that quality is at the center of a practical discussion on the right, on the left. That is the essence of a politician’s work. Therefore, I promise that I will do my best to listen to the arguments and criticisms, to take into account the formulations ”, J. Razma told the members of the Seimas.
When the candidate started asking questions, Arvydas Nekrošius, a peasant working in the opposition, declared that he had no doubts about his skills. A. Nekrošius asked for your opinion on the gender-neutral partnership clause in the coalition agreement. Mr. Razma said this should be discussed.
“It just came to our attention then. There can be no simple and quick answers. I think we can reach a consensus without trying to raise political capital,” he explained.
J. Razma’s colleague, the conservative Mykolas Majauskas, posed his question from the former First Vice President of Seimas Rima Baškienė. He said that she was like a mother, so Mr. Razma also asked how he would bring up disobedient MPs.
“I categorically disagree with their statement, the Seimas is not a kindergarten. (…) If the Seimas trust me, they have the right to demand me, to reprimand me, and I will bow. I see that relationship with the Seimas”, explained J Razma.
The second candidate is Andrius Mazuronis
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen appointed Andrius Mazuronis, representative of the Labor Party, as second vice president of the Seimas. The politician agreed with this proposal.
The second candidate also has the right to speak. Andrius Mazuronis claims that he understands the subtlety of the current situation and the growing passions.
“But I still welcome you and thank you all,” he said.
The politician said that Friday and the 13th are a success for him.
“I would like to direct this to you and ask you to be good, if you can do it so that the day continues to be good,” Mazuronis said.
The politician said he could sign after each word from V. Čmilytė-Nielsen on parliamentarism.
Ramūnas Karbauskis was angry.
Ramūnas Karbauskis, Chairman of the Lithuanian Green and Peasant Union Party, wondered why this particular candidacy is being proposed. The Labor Party is the smallest opposition faction in the Seimas. Therefore, the peasant leader was surprised by such a decision of the new Speaker of the Seimas.
“Why do you propose today a representative of the smaller opposition fraction to the deputies of the Seimas, and not to ours,” said the leader of LVŽS, R. Karbauskis. He recalled that in 2016, the rulers elected as vice-presidents a representative of the largest opposition party.
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen said that other vice-presidents would be elected next week.
Earlier on Friday at the Seimas, R. Karbauskis said that the “peasants” would support V. Čmilytė-Nielsen in the elections for the president of the Seimas, but on condition.
“Our condition is that we support V. Čmilytė-Nielsen, who is provided today. That would make sense, we are the second largest faction,” said the politician.
Algirdas Sysas, the eldest of another opposition Social Democratic faction, said that although he valued A. Mazuronis as a man and as a politician, the faction would not support this candidacy.
According to him, in the Seimas room there was no practice of offering the post of vice president of parliament to a representative of the smaller opposition fraction.
“The current majority of the Seimas may feel a bit uncomfortable, they do not want to repeat the situation of the Union of Peasants and Greens, when the majority has become a minority. Apparently there is a post mortem agreement. To declare opposition does not mean to be opposition. Giving the deputies, we believe that there is an agreement, so to speak, a place to shop for loyalty in making one or another decision, ”said A. Sysas.
Under the initial agreement, two more vice presidents of the Seimas should be in the hands of the conservatives, one by the Freedom Party and the other by an opposition faction.
The Spokesman of the Seimas, after consulting the factions, proposes the candidates for Vice-Presidents in such a way that at least two representatives of the opposition of the Seimas are deputies. The deputies of the president of the Seimas are elected by secret ballot.
On Friday, six factions were also formed in the new Seimas: National Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (50 members), Union of Peasants and Greens of Lithuania (32 members), Liberal Movement (13 members), Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (13 members) , Freedom Party (11 members). ) and the Labor Party (10 members).
At the moment, 12 parliamentarians will work in the mixed group of members of the Seimas.

81 former MPs were re-elected to the thirteenth Seimas and 60 new members were elected. The Seimas is made up of 38 women and 103 men. Their average age is 49 years, 99 percent. future parliamentarians have higher education, mainly law and political science.
Representatives from ten parties will work in the new parliament, the largest member – 50 – will have members of the Christian Democratic faction of the National-Lithuanian Union.
When the new parliament takes office, the government of Prime Minister S. Skvernel will return its powers to the president. She should be appointed to a temporary post until a new center-right government is formed, led by Ingrida Šimonytė.
