Sedimentation: quarantine policy needs to be strengthened

According to the head of state, this was one of the usual meetings between the president and the mayors of different regions. The main objective of this meeting was to discuss vaccination opportunities in the municipalities of the Vilnius region.

According to the head of state, although most of the meeting was about coronaviruses, the mayors also talked about how to implement the next financial perspectives of the European Union. G. Nausėda recalled that Lithuania was divided into two parts: the Vilnius region, which connects some of the municipalities closest to Vilnius and the rest of Lithuania. During a remote meeting with the mayors, they discussed how to fix the resulting problems. The changing needs and opportunities of municipalities were also discussed.

Lack of clarity from the central government

“Most of the time we talk not only about how municipalities are prepared to face the challenges of the coronavirus, but also about how to accept the vaccine, distribute it and implement a vaccination policy. As you know, the vaccine will soon arrive in Lithuania and the role of municipalities in vaccinating people will be very important. Basically, the municipalities are prepared, everyone is more or less prepared to organize this process without problems.

However, what is lacking is still enough uncertainty on the part of the central government: what is the exact order of vaccination, so that there are no unnecessary disturbances, misunderstandings and it is possible to do it quickly and efficiently, ”said G. Nausėda on Monday.

The President mentioned that four priority groups of vaccinated people had been approved in Lithuania and ten in the UK. “A more detailed and detailed breakdown of the vaccinated groups is needed,” clarified G. Nausėda.

According to the head of state, the preparation of a precise plan is hampered by the fact that it is not known exactly how many vaccines will reach Lithuania. Therefore, it is essential to clearly distinguish between the priority groups of people to be vaccinated.

Nausėda emphasized that, according to a recent sociological survey, the majority of the population was ready and willing to get vaccinated, and asked that the problem of criticism of coronavirus vaccines not be demonized.

“It just came to our attention then. I will do my best to demonstrate the benefits of shooting,” he said.

He thanked the Government for the decisions

“The works had to be assumed in difficult conditions, there were spontaneities and tensions in the process of delivering the works, which were completely unnecessary. Now the cabinet is gaining momentum, stuck at work. The decisions that have been taken are, in principle, correct in the direction of the leadership ”, the President spoke about the Government’s decisions.

According to him, the quarantine policy must be tightened. “Unfortunately, the previous quarantine policy has only produced partial results. <..> Although partial results were obtained, results were obtained. Nothing can satisfy that Lithuania is among the leading countries in terms of number of diseases and level of mortality, “he said.

According to G. Nausėda, it will be possible to talk about the first provisional results of the measures introduced last week at the end of this week. However, there is a condition to this, which is a responsible Christmas period.

Return to economy mode

“I cannot blame the previous government for not preparing for a pandemic wave, because a pandemic wave lives up to its laws and the consequences for the economy are guaranteed, unfortunately, in a bad sense of the word for all states. The previous government hid some things. That is why the budget deficit is increasing compared to the original draft. <..>

In the current context, when Lithuania really has to deal with the economic recession, which is again a consequence of the pandemic, we must follow an active fiscal policy, which means that public spending in those periods cannot be financed with adequate income, for so the budget deficit is large enough. “It is important for us to have a very clear plan for next year on how to reduce that budget deficit in a few years,” the president said.

It is possible to do so, but the head of state stressed that it will be necessary to return to the austerity regime.

“We will have to return to the austerity regime as soon as circumstances allow,” said G. Nausėda.
