On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte and discussed the government’s plans for the relaxation stages of the quarantine.

At the press conference held after the meeting, President S. Krėpšta’s senior adviser stated that, in the president’s view, the pandemic situation already allows for ways to be released from quarantine. This is especially true for small businesses.

“Today, small businesses are absorbing the main blow of the quarantine. {…} There are two possible alternatives. On the one hand, we have a very different situation in the municipalities of the country. We certainly have a possible territorial distribution of those where infection rates are much lower and those municipalities are safe.

The second way is to apply very high safeguards. One of the examples is applying similar protective measures to the beauty industry, compared to what we have now in dentistry, ”said S. Krėpšta.

The example of anti-virus protection measures can be taken from other European Union (EU) countries: to apply more stringent personal protection measures, to allow companies with outdoor entrance, to restrict the flow of visitors according to the Institution area, first to allow smaller stores to open.

According to S. Krėpšta, territorial liberation could also be applied in educational institutions: the former could be opened in school municipalities, where the number of infections is less than 200 cases per 100 thousand. population in 14 days. There are currently 15 of these municipalities in Lithuania.

S. Krėpšta also mentioned that the president has not yet ruled out the possibility of vaccinating Lithuania with the Russian Sputnik V vaccine:

“We trust the European Medical Agency (EMA) and its decisions. There is really no need to anticipate events, let’s wait for the decision of the EMA. Then, of course, each state makes an individual decision, taking into account all aspects. {. ..}

There is a strategic goal to get herd immunity for the summer. That means having enough vaccines that are safe, no doubt, so that we can ensure the herd immunity of our people. “

Last week, G. Nausėda also met with representatives of companies in the country. According to the Office of the Presidency, the meeting discussed the financial situation of small entrepreneurs and businesses currently restricted by quarantine, as well as their willingness to operate safely when the decision is made to gradually relax the quarantine rules.

“The stricter quarantine has improved the epidemiological situation in the country. However, the second wave of the pandemic has hit small and medium-sized companies hard, especially those companies or freelancers who trade non-essential goods or provide contact services.

As the pandemic situation changes, we must find a new safe balance between epidemiological and socio-economic objectives ”, G. Nausėda is quoted in the Foreign Ministry report.
