“The activity of scammers who try to cheat money from the population and companies is growing. Instead of phone calls: SMS messages

According to a security expert at Swedbank, scammers have changed their tactics during the year: the number of direct scam calls has decreased, but they have become more active in sending SMS messages with links to fake Internet banking or requests. to reveal login details.

“Cases of people losing money lured by fraudulent investment offers or revealing their login details during a call have dropped by a third. However, the number of people who trusted scammers who sent SMS messages and as a result it multiplied by around 9 ”, says the bank representative.

Online romance can end in losses

Romance fraud has also tripled this year, with malice getting into relationships on dating sites or social media, gaining a person’s trust, and then for whatever reason convincing them to transfer money.

According to E. Skersytė, romantic fraud is time consuming and cases of this type of fraud are not very common, but the losses incurred as a result are still significant, amounting to around 4.5 thousand on average. euros.

Businesses suffer the most

Swedbank’s security expert notes that the relatively larger losses due to fraud are incurred not by individuals, but by businesses. “Although they fall into the traps of scammers much less frequently than the population, the affected companies lose on average about 25 thousand. euros. Scammers attack companies in the country by sending false invoices for goods or services, as well as falsifying the instructions of managers to carry out an urgent money transfer, ”says E. Skersytė.

Residents and businesses are urged to contact the bank immediately after experiencing a scam attack and suspecting that personal data has been disclosed or an illegal payment has been made. During this year, Swedbank managed to avoid fraudulent illegal money transfers, the total amount of which could amount to more than 300 thousand. euros.

“Bank employees never ask their customers to reveal internet connection data, smart identification codes or card data when making a call, sending an SMS message or an email. Letter.
