The LLRA-KŠS representatives in Seimas Rita Tamašunienė, Česlavas Olševskis and Beata Petkevič on Tuesday registered amendments to the Law on Seimas Elections relating to the lower cartel in elections and the exemption for national minority parties.
Politicians claim that in Lithuania, political parties of national minorities have too high an electoral threshold.
“National minorities represent about 15 percent. Therefore, the number of all Lithuanian residents, therefore the number of their representatives must also correspond to the proportions in the Seimas,” says the explanatory note of the project.
Furthermore, the LLRA-KŠS representatives are convinced that the amendments tabled would allow the smaller parties to have their representatives in the Seimas and would encourage a more active participation of citizens in the political life of the country.
Since when they could enter into force, the parliamentarians have not indicated.
The rulers of the previous period – “peasants”, social workers and representatives of the LLRA-KŠS – tried to reduce access to the Seimas for parties and coalitions to 3 and 5 percent, but this initiative was vetoed by President Gitanas Nausėda.
