Scammers call with a fake bank phone number; Such calls from a supposedly official bank phone number can build trust, which is why the bank urges residents to be very careful not to reveal their personal details to anyone.
“Scammers have started a new cheating method, which is called in English spoofing, when you use technology to change your phone number so that it appears that you are calling from an official bank phone number. Scammers posing as bank employees and supposedly calling from the bank’s phone number can inspire confidence, ”warns Audrius Šapola, Director of the Prevention Department at SEB Bank.
According to him, it is notable that most scammers, who falsify and use the bank’s phone number, communicate in Russian because they are calling from abroad, therefore if they offer to speak Lithuanian, the conversation is likely to end. .
Scammers have been using a similar tactic for some time to send fake SMS messages and fraudulently use the sender’s name, which can be both a public authority and a bank name. Because phones group messages by sender’s name, such messages, especially if they appear in a window of prior genuine correspondence with a bank or institution, can be more compelling.
“Once again, we remind customers to be vigilant and critical of the content of calls or messages. It is important to remember that regardless of the person you are dealing with appears as an employee of a bank, the Financial Crimes Service, the Sodra or the State Tax Inspectorate, a police officer, their passwords or the data of their payment cards cannot be revealed to anyone ”, emphasizes A. Šapola.
According to him, it is important for customers to know that the bank itself does not send active links to the Internet bank in messages to customers, nor does it send abbreviated links (//bit.ly).
SEB Bank notes that some people still tend to be hesitant to reveal their personal Internet access data. The results of the SEB Bank Internet Security Test show that among the three questions in which residents make the most common mistakes, there is the question that an institution operating in Lithuania can request personal access to Internet banking data . Therefore, it is important to note that no one can do that.
