Volunteering is generous work that is measured by a different measure: time, help, and attention. Volunteers are welcome at VUL Santara Clinics, the largest hospital in the Vilnius region that coordinates the flow of COVID-19 patients. Together with the Lithuanian Red Cross, a volunteer campaign is launched, the report says.
There are about 960 thousand people in the Vilnius region. population. According to Aušra Bilotienė Motiejūnienė, managing director of VUL Santara clinics, the situation in the region, as in all of Lithuania, is tense: the number of patients admitted to hospitals continues to increase and medical personnel are also ill.
“We are grateful to our staff who understand the situation and agree to help colleagues from other departments. Still, we feel lack of hands in the hospital. There are many activities that do not require medical education, but without them the smooth functioning of the entire hospital would be disrupted.
We sincerely welcome the initiative proposed by the Lithuanian Red Cross to bring together volunteers who can help. We wholeheartedly thank the socially responsible Lithuanian people, who have the strength and determination to help others in difficult times, ”says A. Bilotienė Motiejūnienė.
Volunteers are welcome
Santara clinics welcome volunteers who can contribute to courier activities: carry or escort patients from room to room, take test samples and deliver them to the lab, accompany them to tests, procedures, deliver packages. Assistance is also needed in the rooms for patients with COVID-19.
According to Jurga Šuminienė, deputy director of nursing at the Santara Clinics, there are high hopes that these volunteers will be able to provide assistance for a longer period of time, dedicating at least 20 hours a week to it.
“We understand that our request may seem audacious, but the situation is extraordinary, so the conditions for volunteering are exceptional. All future volunteers will be trained first, as the safety of both patients and volunteers is of the utmost importance to us. Training will receive a lot of attention and precious time for our colleagues, both for personal protection and logistics. We are looking forward to having volunteers who can work shifts, it is especially important to work at night and during holidays, ”says J. Šuminienė.
Form an “employee bank”
The managing director emphasizes that former colleagues and others with medical education are also welcome at the Santara clinics.
“We are forming the so-called ’employee bank’, whose forces we would use if necessary. Once again, on behalf of all of us, I thank the VU Medical School and Vilnius College for their help in the most difficult times. proud of the young members of our community: students who didn’t run away and volunteered to help. “
Volunteering at the Santara clinics is nothing new. Since 2015, in collaboration with the “Kraujas” association, a volunteer project has been started in the VUL Santara clinics, which is continuing with success.
At Santara Clinics, volunteers visit patients at the Center for Hematology, Oncology and Transfusion, Department of Nephrology. Volunteers offer a wide range of help, from very practical actions, to buy products, to haircuts, to emotional help difficult to touch but especially important, honest conversation.
