Last year the fact that a new faction can be formed on the basis of a mixed group of Seimas members was discussed.
“Thoughts like the coronavirus are floating in the air. We will see if the comrades of the Mixed Group become infected, it is necessary to form a joint group. But I think this issue will become clear in the new session, we will coordinate positions in March,” he told Eltai Remigijus Žemaitaitis, a member of the Seimas, at the end of December.
However, it seems that the comrades of the Mixed Group did not “catch” this idea.
With the onset of spring, it has not yet been possible to find enough members for this group, and further negotiations stall. The formation of this faction would facilitate the procedure for electing the leader of the opposition, but according to R. Žemaitaitis, it is currently not possible to convince enough members of the Seimas to join the new faction.
“A core of Seimas members was gathered to be at least 8 to 9 members of the faction. Unfortunately, we cannot find enough people to join the group now. Therefore, today the issue is postponed,” R. Žemaitaitis told Eltai.
According to him, a consensus on who could lead the opposition would be a key impetus for the emergence of a new faction, as this position would be the unifying factor for members of the Mixed Group.
“We must first decide on the choice of the leader of the opposition, because the Mixed Group is neither from there nor from there. Either we want to be the leader of the opposition or not, “said R. Žemaitaitis.
However, a member of the Mixed Group acknowledges that there are currently no active negotiations on an opposition leader that could also lead to the formation of a new faction. In his opinion, an external factor is necessary to stimulate the need for negotiations on an opposition leader and the formation of a new faction.
“Without an opposition leader, it is difficult to make decisions and agree. It takes a kick or a bigger impact for the opposition to realize that a faction is necessary and necessary today. If this is not the case, we will work in Mixed Group and we will propose projects ”, said R. Žemaitaitis, emphasizing that at present we can only wait for the formation of a new faction.
K. Glaveckas: only the LVŽS can unite the opposition
Another member of the Mixed Group, Kęstutis Glaveckas, commenting on the possibility of some members of the group forming a group, highlighted the lack of unity of the group members and said that the formation of a new group is not ongoing, as the strongest opposition party.
“I think key decision makers are expected, because creating a group does not in itself bring benefits. The group of ‘peasants’ must decide. There is the main opposition force, which has a fairly good organization, it has a lot of people, “K. Glaveck told Eltai.
According to him, until the “peasants” take the lead and start talking to the opposition colleagues, the members of the Mixed Group will also not join the united faction.
“LVŽS does not pass through itself. As a result, the smaller opposition parties and individual members of the Seimas do not unite. When there is no force, there is no connection to it,” said K. Glaveckas.
At the end of last year, ELTA announced that MP R. Žemaitaitis made no secret that the idea of bringing together a faction of politicians belonging to the Joint Group of Seimas members was floating in the corridors of the Seimas. At that time, R. Žemaitaitis stated that such a formation would have a coordinated common position and would be a kind of political counterweight to the dominant factions.
According to the Statute of the Seimas, at least seven parliamentarians can form a faction. Currently, the Mixed group of Seimas members is made up of 13 Seimas members: Rita Tamašunienė, Jonas Pinskus, Valdemaras Valkiūnas, Vytautas Bakas, Zigmantas Balčytis, Algirdas Butkevičius, Kęstutis Glaveckas, Petras Gražulis, Domas Griškevičius, Andšlavionšlavies.
