The major of the Social Democratic faction of Seimas A. Sysas told the tv3.lt news portal that it is a pity that G. Paluckas did not listen to his friends’ offer to leave earlier, immediately after the elections. He noted that this had been discussed in both the Presidium and the Council.
During a remote LSDP council meeting on Wednesday, G. Paluckas received much criticism from the party elders.
“The bad evaluation of the election, the bad evaluation of the work of the staff and the president himself do not justify it. That was the wording.” I got the majority of votes in the council, I think he finally realized that they are not the individual friends of the party who are talking about the need to resign, if not the majority, “said A. Sysas.
According to him, this statement does not mean that Mr. Paluck cannot claim to become president of the LSDP and stand in the next election.
“It just came to our attention then. I think he has to answer that question himself. His resignation was necessary immediately after the election, after the second round.
Two months passed before there was no council or vote, I kept doubting. Even on the council, he said it was too short a time because the nominations had already started, the election of the president, so he would not withdraw.
Apparently the results are such that he was not absolutely happy that he had taken that step, “said A. Sysas.
Political scientist: The conflict will continue
Lauras Bielinis, a professor and political scientist at Vytautas Magnus University, says that it is still difficult to say whether G. Paluckas will participate in the new fight for the election of the president of the LSDP, which will take place in May. You can participate, but you can also get out.
“I don’t think that in this situation and now the withdrawal will bring any effective benefit to him personally. Some elections are over, there is still time for others. I believe that today we should see a struggle between the forces of rivalry and that the conflict is likely to continue for a longer time, ”said L. Bielinis.
According to the political scientist, the current step of G. Paluck shows openness to the situation.
“In this case, by taking that step, he shows to be open to the situation. He, I think, will still show himself on the energy side in the future.
On the one hand, he will seek to mobilize his followers around him. There is a kind of division in that party and the difference of opinion is really marked.
Mr. Paluck needs to mobilize his followers and show himself willingly. That resignation shows that you are not afraid of losing your position in the name of a future situation and your own favor.
On the other hand, by resigning in this way, you somehow give the opportunity to reveal yourself to all those who criticize you. I don’t think there is a united front, there can be all kinds of contradictions that weaken those who criticize it. Paluckas will continue to fight, “said L. Bielinis.
Political scientist L. Bielinis recalled that Juozas Olekas also intends to run for the post of president of the LSDP party. The political scientist believes that his presence in the European Parliament “will probably prevent him from closely monitoring and participating in party activities.”
Paluck announced his resignation
Paluck announced Friday night that he was resigning. He announced this decision to the LSDP board on Friday. So far, the news portal tv3.lt has not been able to contact G. Paluck himself.
“Thank you for evaluating the results of the elections. I take full responsibility for the results obtained and the situation. To avoid further deterioration of the reputation of the party in the public eye, I decided to resign as president of the party,” writes G Paluckas in his address to the LSDP council members.
The politician points out that Lithuania, like any democratic state, needs a modern, transparent and strong left political force, which is why it has constantly sought the renewal of the party.
“I am grateful to the team and to all parties that supported and criticized me. Together we are a very important force. I sincerely wish that the Social Democrats overcome challenges, recover, become stronger and focus on the implementation of the Left Agenda. .
Overcoming poverty, inequality, discrimination, guaranteeing all human rights and freedoms for all must be a priority for the State. I have no doubt that we Social Democrats will make a significant contribution to this, ”says G. Paluckas.
G. Paluckas has led the Social Democratic Party since 2017. May. 2019 in the spring he was re-elected president of the LSDP for a second term.
The Social Democratic Party is the largest in Lithuania, with 16.7 thousand. members.
