On the night of Seimas’s last election, speaking about the composition of the future government, R.Karbauskis assured that he did not see any of the Social Democratic ministers at the time.

“Many current ministers cannot be ministers at all, because their powers are in no way sufficient to direct the ministries they now head,” said the politician in October 2016, although he added that two members of the then Cabinet, the foreign minister , Linas Linkevičius and Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis – works well.

In 2012–2016, R. Sinkevičius served as the liaison officer in the then Government. Why did R. Karbauskis turn out to be incompetent then, and is now fit for the position of Minister of Economy and Innovation?

“I really don’t remember what I said in 2016. I probably spoke of those who volunteered. He was not nominated as a minister candidate at the time, so apparently I did not speak,” R. Karbauskis explained his words.

According to him, R. Sinkevičius gained experience while serving as chairman of the Seimas Economic Committee. He has chaired this committee since December 2017.

“If we were to speak on the basis of this decision, first of all, he was the chairman of the Economic Committee to this day, and if we were looking for a compromise when the minister would only work for a few months and he was competent enough, that was the decision. ” You really don’t have to enter the course. We joke that the first letter of the name should be changed in the ministry, and the last name is the same all the time, “peasant” Virginijus Sinkevičius.

He considers L. Savickas to be better

Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis stated that R. Sinkevičius’s candidacy for minister with the president was not easy to coordinate.

“It just caught our eye then. It took a long time, because many candidates were coordinated, “said the prime minister and declined to comment on where his and the president’s opinions differed.

“If we agree with a candidate, it means that our views on this candidate were no different,” said Skvernel.

Previously, he submitted the candidacy of his adviser Lukas Savickas to the head of the country for the ministers of economy and innovation, but President Gitanas Nausėda, arguing the lack of practical experience, rejected it.

R.Karbauskis stated that he did not understand why L. Savickas’ candidacy was not suitable for G.Nausėda, and R.Sinkevičius did not.

“I do not understand this, because, in our opinion, Lukas Savickas would have been a better minister,” added R. Karbauskis.

The newly appointed R. Sinkevičius will head the Ministry of Economy and Innovation for approximately half a year. According to S. Skvernelis, this period of time is enough to implement urgent work and, by the way, they are not so small.

“There is enough time to do the necessary work, especially urgently. The main expectations now lie in boosting our economy, mitigating the effects of the pandemic on the economy, ensuring more effective use of aid, and preparing clearly for the implementation of the economic plan DNA for the next year and a half in terms of investment, economic digitization, development of new activities such as life sciences.

“That is a lot of work that the minister will be able to carry out, it will depend again on his state of mind and equipment,” said the prime minister.

Appointed by the President R. Sinkevičius was sworn in at Seimas on Tuesday and he will hold the position of Minister of Economy and Innovation, which has been vacant since December of last year.
