“The politicization in the area when we actually did all the hikes that were needed and until the end, it made people start to doubt if it was necessary, maybe it was not really dangerous, it was not necessary. And now they themselves have received the situation and are using the same phrases, with exactly the same arguments, “S. Skvernelis told reporters at the Seimas on Thursday.

“It just came to our attention then. I think inappropriate politicking has really distracted our society. For many people, the danger has just lessened, a sense of freedom has emerged and now it is difficult to get everything back with such harsh measures,” he said.

The former head of government recalled that while they were in the opposition, the current rulers criticized both the strict quarantine measures introduced in March and the restrictions imposed in the fall.

S. Skvernelis emphasized that the most important role in managing the pandemic is the role of society, and if it does not comply with the quarantine, neither the existing nor even more strict restrictions will help.

A stricter quarantine regime went into effect in Lithuania on Wednesday, during which many shops, barber shops were closed and the movement of people restricted.
