“One case in which she was found suspicious was filed on May 23, the second on May 25,” lawyer Aliaksandras Filanovičius said after the court hearing.

He did not clarify the merits of these criminal cases because he had signed a confidentiality agreement.

Sapega, a student at the European University of Humanities in Vilnius, was arrested on May 23 along with his friend, opposition blogger Roman Protasevičius, at Minsk airport after the Belarusian regime forcibly landed a Ryanair plane from a couple flying from Athens to Vilnius.

Later, Minsk released a video in which Sapega says he edited the Telegram channel “Black Book of Belarus”, which publishes data on the country’s security forces.

According to the Belarusian human rights center Viasna, S. Sapega has been charged with “inciting discord”, which provides for a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.

Earlier on Monday, a Minsk court rejected S. Sapega’s complaint about his detention, Judge Natalia Dziadkova said, noting that the decision could be appealed again.

The court heard the complaint behind closed doors and the suspect did not attend the hearing.

“The defense will appeal this court decision because it believes that there are certain questions about what Belarus has done [S.Sapegos] arrest and criminal proceedings, ”the lawyer later told reporters.

According to A.Filanovičius, this is related to Minsk’s obligations under two international conventions on air transport security and related case handling.

“According to these conventions, after the incident, that is, the notification of the bomb placed on the plane, Belarus, as part of these conventions, was obliged to give all passengers the opportunity to go wherever they wanted to fly,” the lawyer explained.

According to the lawyer, his client, who is currently in the custody of the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB), said that she was regularly “overwhelmed by fear”.

A.Filanovičius added that S. Sapega had access to the detention center’s library and was well fed.

The attorney was only allowed to visit his client for the first time on May 28.
