“I am very concerned by the news from Minsk that the regime is revoking the accreditations of Western media and expelling journalists from Belarus,” Chichanouskaya said in a statement issued on Saturday.
“If that is true, it is another sign that this regime is morally bankrupt and the only way it will try to stay in power is to incite and intimidate fear,” he said.
According to Lukashenko’s main opponent in the presidential elections, “this tactic will not work.”
“The people of Belarus are no longer afraid. We will win. The darkest hour is always before dawn,” said S. Cichanouskaya.
On Saturday, it was reported that the Belarusian Foreign Ministry has revoked the accreditations of 17 foreign journalists working in the country.
Journalists from Freedom Radio, AFP and Reuters, as well as the BBC, a UK public broadcaster, have lost their accreditations, among others.
Lukashenko threatened to expel “worrying” foreign journalists from Belarus in late July.
