According to Ginzburg, the first volunteers will be vaccinated next Saturday. Participants in the third testing phase will be evaluated again. How many will there be, the director did not say.
The Russian Sputnik V vaccine was registered three weeks ago. The vaccine was licensed before the start of a major third phase of testing. Only at this stage, the vaccine is usually tested with a large number of volunteers and it is monitored whether the active ingredient really protects against infection and what side effects occur.
Moscow’s actions have received much criticism. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has previously said that 40,000 volunteers are being sought for the tests. Muscovites, he said, have a “unique opportunity” to help defeat the virus. Parallel to the trials, vaccines have already been planned for doctors and teachers.
In Russia, the virus has been detected in more than a million people since the start of the pandemic.
