Russia resumed the transit of natural gas through Lithuania to the Königsberg region on Tuesday evening, according to the latest data from the portal of the main Lithuanian gas pipeline operator, Amber Grid.

On Tuesday morning, Amber Grid announced that, at the request of the Russian gas company Gazprom, gas transit from Lithuania to the Krasnodar region was temporarily suspended.

Gas is supplied to Russian territory in transit through Lithuania from Belarus.

Gazprom, the group that controls all Russian natural gas supplies through pipelines outside the country, did not explain the reasons for the suspension.

The gas concern informed the Russian agency TASS that after the suspension of gas supply through Lithuania, the gas needs of the Krasnodar region were fully covered with reserves in the underground storage facilities.

Some experts and politicians are considering that in this way Russia has tested the enclave’s ability to self-supply gas.

The traffic disruption could have been a geopolitical decision, and it is a signal for Lithuania that strategic energy projects, the synchronization of the electricity grids and the gas pipeline to Poland (GIPL), cannot be delayed.

Conservative Paulius Saudargas, a member of the Seimas Energy and Sustainable Development Commission, believes that Russia is currently inspecting systems in the Krasnodar region, which needs gas for electricity generation, in various ways.
